Personal History
Dmitri was actually born on Mars, much to his and everyone else’s surprise.
His father was a Terran hydro-mechanical machinery specialist who had toured much of the Federation working on various projects. His mother, a Valerian citizen, met his father while the elder Malone was on her homeworld of Valeria to help upgrade one of their water dam projects following a natural disaster. She was the assistant to the regional manager of the Valerian power ministry’s hydro-electric division for the subcontinent on which the plan resided. She was there in an administrative capacity to ensure things were done properly and efficiently in accordance with Valerian regulations and procedures.
The two actually started out at odds with one another, but after several months of working together a romance developed. Dmitri, was the first of three children that they had.
His mother married his father, and traveled with him around the quadrant during her pregnancy.
When she was seven months pregnant, they were in the Sol system where she was to meet his parents for the first time. Dmitri’s paternal grandparents lived on Mars, one of them working at Utopia Planetia. And during the visit, Dmitri’s mother unexpectedly went into labor, due to effects of the low gravity. Her homeworld had gravity of 2.4G, and Mars has a mere .4G. Dmitri was therefore born shortly afterward.
Dmitri’s siblings were born in various parts of the known galaxy over the following decade, with the most ‘interesting’ being born in a Klingon warp shuttle, in deep space, between Qo’noS and the Federation border.
Dmitri grew up traveling the quadrant, until about the age of twelve, when his parents settled down on Earth. Dmitri considered Earth is homeworld from that time forward, although legally and technically he was born on Mars.
When Dmitri was sixteen, he didn’t have a clear idea on what he wanted to do with his life. Typical of teens that age, he had several options, but was leaning toward professional boxing as a career. He knew he’d only get a few years out of it, though, and would need something to do after that. That was when, during a school trip and tour of Star Fleet headquarters, he met the retired Admiral Nechayev. She talked to him personally at the event, and he was convinced Star Fleet was his future.
He applied to the academy on his 18th birthday, and started classes a month later.
He met the love of his life Irina Donatova, a Terran of Russian descent, during his first year. They married that year, and he moved off campus to live with her. She was a musician and artist, and he found her fascinating. She teaches art and music to both children and adults on the USS Beckett.
During his third year, he was participating in the Star Fleet Academy boxing championship when he took a serious blow to the back, and was beamed to the nearest medical facility. His spine, while suitable for daily activities, would never be the same. He was unable to continue to compete. But he was strong enough, especially as his half-Valerian genetics gave him extra muscle and bone strength, to continue into a security career.
Dmitri served on two ships, the first of which was a ten-year mission into deep space aboard the USS Heisenberg. His first child, Marie was born on that mission during the first year; his second, Pyotr on the fourth year; and his third Patrick on the last year of that mission. The mission ended two months after the Borg invasion of sector 001 in 2402. His fourth child, Sarinya was born two years after that, and still lives with Dmitri and Irina.
Marie is currently completing her medical degree at Star Fleet Academy.
Pyotr is currently serving aboard Star Base Bravo in their engineering department as a Crewman.
Patrick is currently living on Valeria with Irina’s family, where he is completing his formal education.
Sarinya is currently aboard the USS Beckett with her parents.
Irina talked Dmitri into changing disciplines during his last year of the deep space mission, and by the time he was redeployed, he was now Chief Tactical Officer of the heavy cruiser USS Concord. He served there for four years, before rising to be First Officer of the USS Concord, when her previous First Officer became Captain after USS Concord’s Captain retired. While serving as First Officer of USS Concord, Dmitri was critical in a mission to rescue a Federation Council Member from a group of Terran Isolationist terrorists. Rather than using a guns-first approach, he successfully led a team which negotiated the safe return of the Ambassador, and the peaceful surrender of the group. While the Isolationists are still an ongoing threat, one of their cells was disrupted permanently by his actions.
During the Krynar Inquisition, Dmitri and the Concord served at several major battles: The battle for Sierra-18 (in which the Krynar destroyed Sierra-18), the Battle for Betazed (which the Federation won), and the battle at Earth (which the Federation won). Additionally, the ship participated in the battle at Tellar, and when half the bridge crew was killed, Dmitri took over several stations, and took command when the Captain was killed. He was promoted to Captain, and led the ship during the battle at the Krynar home system.
Upon return, the Concord spent a lot of time helping with the rebuilding efforts after the war.
The Concord was not involved in the conflict between 4th and 1st fleets, and Dmitri was thankfully not put in a position to choose a side.
He served on USS Concord until last year, when he was notified he would spent eight months in the Sol system, at Earth and Mars, overseeing final construction of his first command, the USS Beckett. Dmitri has been involved in the final touches of the ship for almost a year now, and is ready to take her out.
He has spent the past three months selectively choosing his senior staff, and has spent extensive time meeting with each of them, most of all his new First Officer.
Personality Profile
Academy Major(s): Security
Academy Minor(s): Security Procedures, Unarmed Combat, Starship Weapons/Tactics, Starship Defensive Systems
Hobbies and Pastimes: Loves reading, often has a PADD stuffed with ancient and classic novels. Holodeck activity is often medieval/fantasy adventures, spy/action adventures, or ancient sci-fi scenarios.
Short-Term Goals: Succeed in bringing recognition and honor to the first of a new class of starship.
Long-Term Goals: Participate in a long-term deep space exploration.
Personality: A balance between light and friendly, and formal. Circumstantial changes.
Sense of Humor: Unintentional, usually relating to mispronunciation or misunderstanding of Standard. During his developmental years, he spoke almost exclusively Valerian (which is based on Terran Russian).
Phobias: Heights, specifically where he is unprotected. E.g. cliffs, ledges, chasms, turboshafts.
Likes: Cold, snow, tundra conditions.
Dislikes: Dishonesty, or people who are too lax in life. He does not like people who do not take situations with the proper weight.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: People who talk too much. Dmitri likes things said succinctly, although he sometimes does not speak that way.
Bad Habits or Vices: Dmitri often thinks out loud, sometimes in his native Valerian.
Achievements: Rescuing the ambassador from the terrorists. Making first contact with several species on his deep space mission. Dmitri led several away teams to worlds previously undiscovered.
Disappointments: Not being there to help defend the Sol system when the Borg invaded in 2402. He remembers the invasion of 2373.
Illnesses: Dmitri suffers a rare Valerian genetic disorder which manifests with many of the symptoms of arthritis, although it is not currently cureable. It is treatable with occasional pain relievers and anti inflammatories, but he rarely uses them.
Strengths: Being half-Valerian gives Dmitri a very solid bone and muscle structure due to the high gravity of his mother’s homeworld. He also has a deep drive to complete a mission assignment.
Weaknesses: Dmitri is sometimes stricken with severe physical pain, which he hides very well, but he may be seen to wince or grunt sometimes due to his illness.
Fears: Another invasion like the Borg or Krynar which threatens his family and those close to him.
Prejudices: Borg and Krynar and anyone else who forces their will upon others.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Rarely out of uniform on ship. When he is on leave or dressing casual, he prefers comfortable loose fitting clothing. He might be as likely seen in a sweatshirt or t-shirt and a pair of sweatpants or shorts as anything else.
Distinguishing Features: Stature. His stature is closer to that of a full Valerian than a human. That is to say he is short and very stocky, wide and broad. Very muscular and with a solid bone structure.
Pets: His daughter, who is on board, has a pet housecat named Kryakat'. This cat is large and orange, and makes a ‘quacking’ sound when it meows.
Friends: Dmitri makes friends easily and has made close friends with several of his former crewmates.
Personal Paradigm Shifts
Most Painful Experience: Being in a distant sector during both the Borg invasion of 2402. Hearing about it all after the fact, and knowing he couldn’t be there to help.
Best Time: shortly after academy, being posted to a deep space exploration mission on a Galactic Survey Cruiser, with his family. They were gone for 10 years exploring distant reaches of the Beta Quadrant.
Most Crucial Experience: Deciding, at the behest of his wife, to switch disciplines from SEC to TAC to further his career toward Command and be in a less physically dangerous career. This changed the path of his life forever--before this his goal had been to command security on a star base.
Role Model: Retired Admiral Nechayev (deceased). He met her once, after she retired. He was young and just about to enter Star Fleet academy. She was at an event he attended, and took the time to talk to him about Star Fleet and her career. He had been undecided, and speaking with her made him want to do everything he could to help the Federation, and that the best way was to join Star Fleet Security.
