Midshipman (may also be addressed as Midshipwoman or Midshipperson depending on preference) is an old naval designation for a student in training to become a commissioned officer. In Star Fleet, a midshipman is a commissioned officer of the lowest rank.
After completing their officer training at Star Fleet Academy, Cadets became Midshipmen and were sent on their Midshipman cruises, active-duty field exercises aboard starships during which hands-on training is gained and experience earned through hands-on experience working with the equipment, learning the different functions of the ship, and being subjected to random tests and exams. These 'Middy Cruises' are supervised by the Officer Candidate Training Officer (OCTO), usually the ship's First Officer.
As Midshipmen, the former Cadets are already officers, but their abilities are traditionally put to the test under real conditions in order to find out how good they really are. If a Midshipman fails on the Midshipman Cruise, there is little chance for them to ever be given an active commission.
The Midshipman's Commanding Officer formally endorses a "pass" grade on the cruise. Completing the cruise qualifies a candidate for permanent promotion to Ensign, which their Commanding Officer has the authority to grant.
Rank pips for midshipman are a single solid pip, worn on the collar.
- Midshipman are the lowest rank in Federation Star Fleet. The points required for this position are 0 - 1,499.
- Players who hold this rank are on probation until they graduate to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. During the probationary period, the applicant may be ordered back to the Academy or removed from the game for gross rule violations or by demonstrating a lack of understanding of basic game play mechanics. The President (Pres), Commander-in-Chief (CINC), and the Superintendent of Star Fleet Academy (SUPT) may recommend and enforce this provision.
