Chief Science Officer

The Chief Science Officer is the senior staff member aboard a starship or starbase with the broad responsibility of coordinating the science department of the post. They must hold the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade or higher.
Chief Science Officer was a standard position aboard space vessels. Star Fleet, Arkonian, Klingon, Romulan, and Vulcan vessels all operated with Chief Science Officers. In the Vulcan High Command, the Chief Science Officer was assisted by a deputy science officer. In Star Fleet, several junior science officers assisted the Chief Science Officer.
In 2270, James T. Kirk considered Commander Spock to be the best science officer in Star Fleet.
Chief Science Officers are responsible for observing and theorizing explanations for strange or seemingly unexplainable circumstances. In the 22nd and 23rd centuries, the science officer was responsible for sensor readings.
A general survey party requires the direction of the Chief Science Officer. In a medical emergency, the findings of the Chief Science Officer are heavily relied upon.
The Chief Science Officer is required to keep sufficient data. They are also required to supply the commanding officer with all reports, observations, and speculations that might affect the safety of their vessel.
According to Jadzia Dax, it was a Chief Science Officer's job to always have a "better idea."
