Fleet Captain

Fleet Captain is a title given to a senior Captain with a different set of responsibilities than a starship captain. Fleet Captain is an honorary rank; often equal in grade to Captain and a grade below Commodore.
Usually Fleet Captains serve as Chiefs of Staff to a Flag Officer, commanders of subsectors under the jurisdiction of a senior Admiral, or are assigned to undertake specific diplomatic tasks. The rank has also been temporarily granted to senior captains in task forces not requiring the leadership of a Commodore. Other Fleet Captains have been appointed upon their retirement from active service.
Though the rank insignia of a Fleet Captain is the same as a standard Captain, Fleet Captains wear uniforms more closely associated with Admirals and other Flag Officers.
