This article is about biological viruses. There are also computer viruses.

A virus is a submicroscopic parasite that can cause disease. They consist of a core of DNA or RNA surrounded by protein. Viruses are not considered lifeforms.

We would like to acknowledge the contribution of http://memory-alpha.org/. Memory Alpha is a recognised source of Star Trek 'canon' and has been invaluable in authoring this resource.

Altarian Encephalitis

A retrovirus that incorporates its DNA directly into the cells of its host. The virus can lie dormant for years, but activate without warning. Victims are be feverish, comatose and suffer from widespread synaptic degradation. Long-term memory is erased back to the point of infection.

Andronesian Encephalitis

Andronesian encephalitis is an unpleasant, but not life-threatening, disease transmitted by airborne particles that is common in Federation space due to the transmission of the particles via space travel. It has been known to cause seizures.

Aphasia Virus

The Aphasia Virus was invented in 2351 by Dekon Elig, a Bajoran scientist, and his assistant Surmak Ren. They stored the virus aboard Deep Space 9 (Terok Nor) as a booby trap intended for its Cardassian occupiers. The virus did not technically induce aphasia, usually caused by physical damage to an area of the brain, but only mimicked its effects in a similar manner. Its symptoms included speaking in gibberish and the inability to understand language. An antidote was created by Surmak Ren shortly after the virus was accidently released on the station.

The Ferengi and the Founders are immune to the affects of the aphasia virus.

Choriocytosis Virus

A virus affecting the ability of blood cells to carry oxygen to the body's organs. It is known to affect Humans and Vulcans.

Copper-based blood life

In any being that has copper-based blood, such as Vulcans, this disease is fatal. A highly contagious infection surrounds blood cells, making them unable to carry oxygen. Symptoms include anxiety, extreme fatigue, dizziness, cyanoisis, trouble breathing, increased pulse, and coma. Strobolin, a naturally occurring drug, can treat the disease, but without it, the patient will die in the first 24-72 hours.

Iron-based blood life

This is merely a nuisance to beings with iron-based blood, such as Terrans. Symptoms are aching joints and muscles, slight fever, and irritability. Inflammatory and analgesic medications should counteract the symptoms.

Chicken pox

Please follow the above link to the individual page for this entry.

Common cold

This section needs an update.

An acute inflammation of the upper respiratory tract experienced by various humanoids of various age groups. It is highly contagious. Symptons include nasal congestion, coughing, sneezing, muscle fatigue, chills, fever and headache. There is no cure, but symptoms usually subside in a week due to the body’s natural defenses. Treatments are salicylic acid to control aches and fever, rest, and plenty of fluids.

Fostossa virus

The Fostossa virus was an epidemic on Bajor while Crell Moset, a Cardassian exobiologist, was practising medicine during the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor. Crell allegedly used inhumane practices, and is thought to have deliberately infected hundreds of unaffected Bajorans with the Virus while researching a cure, and many thousands of Bajorans have thought to have died from the disease whilst in his care.

However Moset's research did provide a cure and Fostossa was eradicated sometime during the occupation.

Intron virus (Barclay's Protomorphosis Syndrome)

An artificial disease accidentally created by Dr. Beverly Crusher. While attempting to cure Lieutenant Reginald Barclay of Urodelan flu, she used a synthetic T-cell to activate the gene that would fight off the infection. An anomaly in Barclay's genetic structure caused the T-cell to mutate and activate all of his dormant genes, including his latent introns. Interaction between the Urodelan flu caused the T-cell to become an airborne virus. The initial symptoms of the disease include abnormal behavior, irritability, chills, fever, and paranoia. The virus causes the awakened genes to become aggressive, and alter the body until it physically regresses into an earlier form of its species. In short, the body de-evolves. The syndrome was cured by using amniotic fluid to create a retrovirus that eliminated the effects.

Harvester Virus

Hesperan thumping cough

A medical condition similar to influenza.

Influenza

Also known as the flu.

A common Human disease causing fever, congestion, and other symptoms. Common treatments include Tryptophan Lysine Distillate. Similar ailments include Levodian flu, Toluncan ague and Hesperan thumping cough.

Kamaraazite Flu

Kamaraazite flu is a viral infection much nastier than the Human common cold. It is characterized by severe respiratory symptoms. Violent sneezing can cause patients to regurgitate their pineal gland.

Klingon augment virus

Please follow the above link to the individual page for this entry.

Levodian flu

A virus similar to influenza that only last 29 hours. The Klingon augment virus was a modified form of the Levodian flu.

Life prolongation complex

Please follow the above link to the individual page for this entry.

Macrovirus

Please follow the above link to the individual page for this entry.

Measles

Please follow the above link to the individual page for this entry.

Memory virus

Parasitic organism that thrived on the peptides generated by its host’s brain. The virus is able to evade the body’s immune system by disguising itself as a memory engram. The parasite creates a false memory for its host that is so traumatic that the host’s mind will repress it. The memory virus will live in person after person, hiding in a part of the brain that the conscious mind would want to avoid at all costs. When it senses the death of its host, the virus will leave to find another. Thoron radiation is lethal to the Memory Virus.

Mendakan pox

A disease similar to the Chicken pox that is characterized by skin mottling. It is not fatal.

Morphogenic virus

Please follow the above link to the individual page for this entry.

Omega IV Virus

A filterable virus native to Omega IV which dehydrates the body until it is reduced to white crystals known as “uremic frost”. Incubation begins when in contact with the atmosphere of Omega IV. Onset of the virus happens upon removal from Omega IV. Symptoms include thirst, concentrated urine, loss of weight, poor skin turgor, sunken eyes, fever, increased pulse with decreased cardiac output, and renal failure. The only immunity is found naturally within the atmosphere of Omega IV, and prolonged exposure can result in total immunity.

Orkett's disease

A childhood virus that swept through the Bajoran work camps during the Cardassian Occupation, killing thousands. The only cure was a bone marrow transplant from a viable donor.

Parinisti measles

An endoplsmic virus that is very infection, but not lethal if a vaccine is administered.

Phage

Please follow the above link to the individual page for this entry.

Plasma plague

Plasma plague is a lethal disease caused by a group of viruses known since the 2260s. The pioneering research was conducted on them by Dr. Susan Nuress in 2295 following an epidemic on Oby VI. One mutated strain, developed during Nuress's explorations, was found to grow more rapidly when exposed to eichner radiation. Plasma plague threatened the heavily populated Rachelis system in 2365. A strain similar to what Nuress found threatened the USS Enterprise-D, when the ship was transporting specimens of plasma plague to Science Station Tango Sierra to combat the Rachelis system contagion.

Polycocyx Astris

This virulent species of space-dwelling microbe is found inside grains of interstellar dust. It can drift in a dormant state for millions of years before infecting a host and causing a rather nasty cold.

Polywater intoxication (PSI 2000 virus)

Rop’ngor

Rop'ngor is a Klingon illness that is comparable to Human measles. It is typically experienced at a young age by Klingon children. Fainting can be a symptom of this illness. Despite that, Worf was afflicted with this illness in 2365. Doctor Katherine Pulaski hid the true nature of his condition from Captain Picardin order to protect Worf's reputation.

Quazulu VIII virus

The Quazulu VIII virus was a respiratory virus that produced cold-like symptoms and was transferred by a sweet-scented perfume thatWorf recognized as smelling like night-blooming throgni.

Saurian virus

The Saurian virus is a virus originating from the planet Sauria. While on Dramia II, Dr. McCoy treated a Dramian colonist named Kol-Tai, who was afflicted with a strain of the Saurian virus. Antibodiescreated to combat the Saurian virus were later discovered by McCoy to be the cure for the Dramian plague that afflicted the crew of theUSS Enterprise.

Silicon-based virus

A silicon-based virus was a silicon-based lifeform that infected Hoshi Sato and Commander "Trip" Tucker from the NX class starship Enterprise in 2154 while they were orbiting a planet under Organianobservation. The virus had previously infected Cardassian and Klingon crews, although the latter waskilled by their commanding officer

Tarkalean flu

The Tarkalean flu is an infectious, viral-borne disease originating on the planet Tarkalea. In 2377, while Tuvok was undergoing the effects of pon farr, Tom Paris examined him and deduced the condition. To protect Tuvok's dignity (among Vulcans pon farr was a very private matter), Paris told him that he would inform Captain Janeway that the Vulcan was suffering from a mild case of this affliction, allowing him time to get through it undisturbed in his quarters. The ruse proved to be unsuccessful, as Janeway remembered that the last time Tuvok had the "Tarkalean flu" was exactly seven years before; pon farr occurred once every seven years.

Temecklian virus

Temecklian virus was a contageous disease known to have outbreaks on Bajor. In 2372, Constable Odo used an outbreak of Temecklian virus on Bajor as an excuse to conduct a Class 2 inspection of Kasidy Yates'freighter, the Xhosa, when she was suspected of being a Maquis smuggler. Yates protested saying that none of her cargo came from Bajor and convinced Captain Sisko to let her leave without the inspection by promising to flood her entire cargo hold with baryon radiation as a precaution.

Teplan Blight

Viral disease, characterized by spider-like lesions that appear blue at birth but redden as death approaches. Introduced by the Jem'Hadar to the Teplan race as retribution for not joining the Dominion. Electromagnetic fields produced by modern technology cause a "quickening" of the virus. Though no cure could be produced, a vaccine was created that protected unborn children and those who hadn't contracted the disease.

Terellian Death Syndrome

A deadly disease which causes irreversible cellular degradation. Its initial symptoms are somewhat similar to that of Urodelan Flu.

Terrellian plague

The Terrellian plague is a devastating viral infection, renowned for the excruciating discomfort its victims suffer. The first symptoms of Terrellian plague is a minor headache, only shortly later do the symptoms become much, much worse. (ENT: "Singularity") It is often used in hyperbole or as an exaggerating comparative: "It's heartburn, Neelix, not the Terrellian plague."

Terothka Virus

The Terothka Virus is a highly contagious disease unique to Romulan physiology. While various strains exist, the symptoms are similar - the most unpleasant of which are considered to be stomach cramps and a debilitating rash.

Thelusian Flu

An exotic but harmless rhino-virus with symptoms similar to influenza.

Toluncan ague

A type of influenza that Talaxians, among other species, can contract.

Tsiolkovsky Infection

A water-borne viral infection that acts as a depressant on the body's neural system, lowers inhibitions by acquiring carbon from the body and acting on the brain as an intoxicant. Tsiolkovsky Infection is very similar to the Psi 2000 Virus.

Ulcartic virus

Ulcartic virus is a very deadly and very painful disease, sometimes used as a brutal method of execution by the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance in the mirror universe. The virus causes the subject's internal organs to heat up, to the point where the victim's body literally boils to death. Elim Garak planned to execute Intendant Kira Nerys with a concentrated dose of ulcartic virus, but when Regent Worf spared her life, Garak planned to use it on Zek, Quark, and Rom instead. However, Ezri got the drop on Garak and injected him with his own hypospray, killing him.

Urodelan flu

A relatively harmless viral disease with symptoms that include blurred vision, dizziness, palpitations, and a stinging sensation in the lower spine. Urodelan flu is characterized by a slightly irregular cell count, and elevated intra-vascular pressure. Urodelan Flu combined with a synthetic T-cell gave rise to Barclay’s Protomorphosis Syndrome.

Vegan D virus

A deadly flu like virus sometimes employed as a biological weapon.

Zanthi fever

A virus which affects the empathic abilities of older Betazoids. It causes them to project a certain emotion onto those with a concealed tendency to feel that emotion. An example of this is when the crew of Deep Space Nine became attracted to various other members of the crew when Lwaxana Troi had Zanthi fever. The only symptom is a slight headache. The virus can by cured with a simple wide-spectrum anti-viral agent.
