A virus is a sub-microscopic parasite that can cause disease. They consist of a core of DNA or RNA, surrounded by proteins. Viruses are not considered lifeforms.

Altarian Encephalitis

A retrovirus that incorporates its DNA directly into the cells of its host.

The virus can lie dormant for years, and activate without warning.

Victims can turn feverish, comatose and suffer from widespread synaptic degradation. Long-term memory is also erased back to the point of infection.

Andronesian Encephalitis

Andronesian encephalitis is an unpleasant, but not life-threatening, disease.

It is transmitted by airborne particles, which are common in Federation space, due to the transmission of the particles via space travel. It has been known to cause seizures.

Aphasia Virus

The Aphasia Virus was invented in 2351 by a Bajoran scientist, and his assistant. They stored the virus aboard Deep Space 9 (then Terok Nor) as a booby trap intended for its Cardassian occupiers.

The virus only mimicked the effects of aphasia, the loss of ability to understand or express speech.

An antidote was created shortly after the virus was accidently released on the station once it was taken over by Starfleet.

The Ferengi and the Founders are immune to the affects of the aphasia virus.

Choriocytosis Virus

A virus that affects the ability of blood cells to carry oxygen to the body's organs.

It is known to affect Humans and Vulcans.

In any being that has copper-based blood, such as Vulcans, this disease is fatal.

Symptoms include anxiety, extreme fatigue, dizziness, trouble breathing, increased pulse, and coma. Strobolin can treat the disease, but without it, the patient will die in the first 24-72 hours.

For being with iron-based blood, such as Humans, symptoms include aching joints and muscles, slight fever, and irritability.

Fostossa virus

The Fostossa virus became an epidemic on Bajor while a Cardassian exobiologist practiced medicine during the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor. The scientist allegedly used inhumane practices, thought to have deliberately infected hundreds of Bajorans with the virus in order to help his research in finding a cure. Thousands of Bajorans are thought to have died from the disease while in his care.

The research did prove to help develop a cure, and the Fostossa virus was eradicated sometime during the Cardassian occupation.

Harvester Virus

See main page: Harvester Virus

Developed as a fatal biological weapon by the T'Lani and the Kellerun.

Hesperan thumping cough

A medical condition similar to the Human influenza (flu).

Kamaraazite Flu

Kamaraazite flu is a viral infection, similar to, but much nastier than the Human common cold.

It is characterized by severe respiratory symptoms. It also causes violent sneezing.

Levodian flu

A virus similar to the Human flu, and only last 29 hours.

The Klingon augment virus was a modified form of the Levodian flu.

Macrovirus

See main page: Macrovirus

Native to the Delta Quadrant, this virus quickly evolves into a large-scale version of itself.

Memory virus

A parasitic organism that thrived on its host’s brain. The virus is able to evade the body’s immune system by disguising itself as a memory engram.

The parasite creates a false memory for its host, which is so traumatic that the host’s mind will repress it. The memory virus will hide in a part of the brain that the conscious mind tries to avoid at all costs, due to the inserted false memory. When it senses the death of its host, the virus will leave to find another.

Thoron radiation is lethal to the Memory Virus.

Mendakan pox

A disease similar to the Human virus of Chicken pox, and is characterized by skin mottling. It is not fatal.

Morphogenic virus

See main page: Morphogenic virus

The morphogenic virus was a degenerative disease created by a rogue Federation agency.

It was created as a means to attack the Founders of the Dominion, and end the threat they posed to the Alpha Quadrant.

Omega IV Virus

Native to Omega IV, this virus dehydrates the body until it is reduced to white crystals known as “uremic frost.”

Incubation begins once one is in contact with the atmosphere of Omega IV.

Onset of the virus happens once a person leaves Omega IV. Symptoms include thirst, concentrated urine, loss of weight, poor skin color, sunken eyes, fever, increased pulse, decreased cardiac output, and renal failure.

The only immunity is found naturally within the atmosphere of Omega IV, and prolonged exposure can result in total immunity.

Orkett's disease

A childhood virus that swept through the Bajoran work camps during the Cardassian Occupation, killing thousands.

The only cure was a bone marrow transplant from a viable donor.

Parinisti measles

A virus that is very infectious, but not lethal if a vaccine is administered.

Phage

See main page: Phage

The Phage was a disease that infected the Vidiian species for at least two thousand years.

It caused the genetic makeup to break down, and therefore, their organs to fail.

This virus was highly resistant to medical treatment.

Plasma plague

A lethal disease, caused by a group of viruses documented in the Alpha Quadrant since the 2260s.

One mutated strain was found to grow more rapidly when exposed to eichner-type radiation.

Polycocyx Astris

This virulent species of space-dwelling microbe is found inside grains of interstellar dust.

It can drift in a dormant state for millions of years before infecting a host and causing a rather nasty cold.

Polywater intoxication (PSI 2000 virus)

See main page: Polywater intoxication

A water-borne virus, it suppresses inhibitions, distorts perceptions of reality, and relaxes its victim’s inhibitions.

Onset occurs within an hour of exposure.

Rop’ngor

A Klingon illness that is comparable to Human measles.

It is typically experienced at a young age by Klingon children. Symptoms can include light-headedness and fainting.

Quazulu VIII virus

A respiratory virus, it produces cold-like symptoms, and is transferred by a sweet-scented perfume that.

Saurian virus

Virus originating from the planet Sauria.

Antibodies created to combat the Saurian virus were later discovered by Federation doctors to be the cure for the Dramian plague.

Tarkalean flu

An infectious, viral-borne disease originating on the planet Tarkalea.

Temecklian virus

Contagious disease known to have outbreaks on Bajor.

Flooding an area, or treating a patient with, baryon radiation can be used as a precaution or treatment for this virus.

Teplan Blight

Viral disease, characterized by spider-like lesions that appear blue at birth but redden as death approaches.

This disease was introduced by the Jem'Hadar to the Teplan race, as retribution for not joining the Dominion.

Electromagnetic fields produced by modern technology cause a "quickening" of the virus.

Though no cure could be produced, a vaccine was created that protected unborn children and those who hadn't contracted the disease.

Terellian Death Syndrome

A deadly disease which causes irreversible cellular degradation.

Its initial symptoms are somewhat similar to that of Urodelan Flu.

Terrellian plague

Devastating viral infection, known for the excruciating discomfort its victims suffer.

The first symptoms of Terrellian plague include minor headaches, followed by intense migraines.

Terothka Virus

Highly contagious disease, unique to Romulan physiology.

While various strains exist, all the symptoms are similar: stomach cramps and a debilitating rashes.

Thelusian Flu

An exotic but harmless rhino-virus with symptoms similar to the Human disease of influenza (flu).

Toluncan ague

A type of influenza that Talaxians, among other species, can contract.

Tsiolkovsky Infection

A water-borne viral infection that acts as a depressant on the body's neural system.

It also lowers a person's inhibitions, and does so by acquiring carbon from the body and acting on the brain as an intoxicant.

Tsiolkovsky Infection is very similar to the Psi 2000 Virus.

Ulcartic virus

A deadly and very painful disease.

The virus causes the subject's internal organs to heat up to the point where the victim's body literally boils to death.

Urodelan flu

Relatively harmless viral disease, with symptoms that include blurred vision, dizziness, heart palpitations, and a stinging sensation in the lower spine.

Urodelan flu is characterized by a slightly irregular cell count, and elevated intra-vascular pressure.

Zanthi fever

Virus which affects the empathic abilities of older Betazoids.

It causes them to project emotions onto those with a concealed tendency to feel that emotion.

The only symptom is a slight headache, and can be cured with a simple wide-spectrum anti-viral agent.
