Note: This is NOT a PC and NPC rated species.

The Founders are liquid-based, shapeshifting lifeforms native to the Gamma Quadrant of the Milky Way Galaxy. Their homeworld was a rogue planet within the Omarion Nebula that was destroyed by an invasion of Cardassian and Romulan ships. They moved to a new, secret location.

The Founders are best known for being the ruling caste of the Dominion.

Physiology

A Founder's natural state is its liquid form, which it must revert to approximately every sixteen hours in order to regenerate. Since the Founders do not eat, it is theorized that they pull the energy required for them to function from subspace. It is also theorized that they use some kind of subspace pocket to store additional mass during a morph. They can take virtually any form, typically limited by their mass, ranging from humanoid aliens to fog to reflective surfaces to large spacefaring creatures capable of warp speed travel.

The Founders can survive in the vacuum of space, and are highly resistant to disruptor fire.

They have no sense of smell.

The Founders are assumed to be immortal so long as they are not injured or killed via a physical injury or disease. This is because they do not appear to have any cells that might be subject to decay or aging over time.

The Great Link

It seems that the Founders can sense each other's presence no matter what form they might be in. They prefer to think of themselves as a drop (the individual) in the larger ocean, what they call the Great Link. A Founder, therefore, typically has little sense of individual identity. Being a liquid-based lifeform, in order to link with other Founders they simply revert to this state and the liquid blends together, creating a link between them.

History

According to the Founders, at one time they were peaceful and explored the galaxy. But they were persecuted by some of the “solids” (mono-form humanoids), and kept their planet secret for a long time. The “solids” called the Founders "Changelings" as an insult, but the Founders took the name for themselves as an act of defiance.

Long ago, the Founders sent out one hundred of their infants in order to gather information and explore. They were to return later and share what they have learned. The Founders did not expect any to return until the late-27th century. Odo, a Founder who served on Deep Space Nine, was among the 100.

Beginning some 2,000 years ago, they sought to maintain "order" out of the chaos they perceived from the “solids”. The began to conquer the Gamma Quadrant with a rule based on strict obedience. This was enforced by the Jem'Hadar troops they genetically bred into chemical addiction for control, and administered by the Vorta they cloned — both of whom worship the Founders as gods.

Hundreds of Gamma Quadrant races were conquered before the Founders and their Dominion discovered the Bajoran wormhole into the Alpha Quadrant. They sought to conquer the Alpha Quadrant as well, with the help of the Cardassians and other species. For more information, see Dominion.

At one point in the Federation-Dominion war, the Great Link was infected by a morphogenic virus that threatened them with extinction. The Federation's secret police, Section 31, intended to wipe out the Founders, leaving the Dominion powerless and wavering. The cure to this virus was eventually taken from Section 31 by Doctor Julian Bashir. Odo, a Founder that served the Bajoran government, was given the cure and used it to save his people.
