As they are somewhat secretive about their sexual practices, it is unknown whether their have four or five different genders.

Biologically, they share a similar internal physiology with Vulcans and Romulans. Their neurology is similar to both, though their blood chemistry makeup is closer to the Vulcans. These similarities make them susceptible to the diseases that plague both races. Most notably, Rigellians possess two spines.

In 2154, a Rigelian scout ship was attacked by a Romulan drone ship, which was disguised as the Earth starship Enterprise, NX-01. The attack was designed to destabilize the sector, and it was eventually revealed who the true attacker was.
In early 2155, the Rigelians participated in talks discussing their wish to join as a possible member in the Coalition of Planets along with Humans, Tellarites, Andorians, Denobulans, and Vulcans.
