Personal History
Kalos was born on the Betazed homeworld, in the capital city of Rixx. His parents were well educated, father a renowned neurosurgeon, mother psychoanalyst and author. He was groomed for a career in medicine from an early age. Some of his later childhood was spent on Earth, where he then studied at Oxford University. This was where he met his future wife Joanna. Their marriage lasted ten years, which was something of a miracle in itself, as the two differed over many issues. Their two children were the main reason to stay together so long, but eventually Joanna had had enough of his workaholic nature, the nightmares, and the distance relationship that their marriage had become once he joined Starfleet, and filed for divorce. She told their children that their father was dead. Given the events of his career, and although he missed them, he figured they were better off believing he was gone.
Stardate 20304.25.
The USS Yoritomo was on fire. Explosions and flames on every deck. Sirens wailed. Yet the one sound that Ensign Kalos Arawn took from that day was a voice that came back to him in his nightmares. Sometimes the voice made his ears ring, sometimes it was just a whisper, but always the same words, always the same refrain;
We are the Borg. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.
From the viewport on the Mirak starship Lionstrike, Kalos watched his home among the stars die, set on a collision course with the Borg wedge shaped ship that had sealed her fate. Very few of the crew had escaped in life pods, to be picked up by their Mirak allies. Kalos remembered the faces of each of them in the cramped space of the pod; Lieutenants Prolog, Balak and Lopu, himself, and a young Trill scientist Kinziri Jal. Later he’d seen them at the funeral of their Captain, then they had all parted ways.
In the years that followed the defeated Borg Invasion, Kalos continued to serve in Starfleet in the medical department. Gradually the nightmares of the Borg faded away. He moved up in rank and position, from assistant Chief Medical Officer on the USS Antilles, to full blown CMO on the USS Chilliwak. He was then put in a situation that called for command skills, when half of the senior staff of the scout ship USS Cortez were killed during a mission. Lieutenant junior grade Kalos Arawn was then put through command training and assigned as First Officer when the Cortez was put back out with a resupplied crew. He served with some distinction on the small vessel for a number of years before inevitably, war came to the Federation once more.
His career took a step into the shadows while he was attached to the Heavy Marine Assault Ship, USS Lejeune. Mission details remained classified, but the rumour mill would have it believed that the vessel undertook several covert missions before it was destroyed above Carraya on Stardate 21104.25.
Kalos Arawn was one of many Federation citizens who were captured by Klingon forces, and though interrogated, he did not break. Using Betazoid mental exercises Kalos kept himself strong. Imprisoned, he was almost forgotten about. Surviving the Klingon prison was tough, and it was only through meditation that he was able to keep from despair. It was only inevitable that something would break. Always a strong telepath, Kalos developed his skill further while in prison. Listening to the thoughts of others kept him from dwelling on thoughts of his own. Listening to the thoughts of his captors helped him form a plan of escape.
It is documented, but very rare, for Betazoid telepathy to take on a dark and powerful aspect. Going back to around the 20th Century, then three centuries later with the birth of Hent Tevren, there have been select individuals and groups that discovered or developed a technique to use telepathy to kill. By flooding the minds of others with intense and terrifying images, they were almost literally scared to death. Kalos, being a student of Betazoid history, read about such people but records of the exact method was either lost or highly classified. Given the situation and conditions in the Klingon prison, Kalos was motivated to find such a method himself. The prison break left every single Klingon he encountered dead. A few of the Starfleet prisoners were also freed from the wing in which he was held, and between them they got away and off the planet. How the guards were killed was undisclosed publically, the surviving prisoners refusing even to speak of what happened, but they all feared Kalos Arawn. There was a darkness they could see in him that was darker than the black of his eyes.
Kalos required months of counselling and therapy following his time in prison. He underwent intensive training to control his mental abilities, he was taught a technique to impose a psionic inhibitor on himself. He attempted to embrace a pacifistic philosophy in fitting with his former career path as a healer. Since this time he found he had to practice meditation methods to remain in control of his dark abilities. Close quarters and proximity with others continued to put stress on his control. He planned to resign from Starfleet completely, perhaps setting up a medical practice back on Betazed, somewhere in the country, somewhere with a low population, somewhere peaceful.
Starfleet Intelligence had other plans.
Don’t they always?
