The USS Columbia was a Steamrunner class special operations vessel under the command of Star Fleet Special Operations Command. The Columbia is based at Area 42 and can be used for conventional operations when needed, however the bulk of its missions have special ops or fast strike profiles and as such are often classified. The vessel features many pieces of experimental equipment, and it is typically one of the first to get new advances in technology.

Lineage

The USS Columbia is the named for the capital and largest city of the state of South Carolina, which itself derives its name from the poetic word for the Americas and the feminine personification of the United States. Founded in 1786 along the fall line of the Congaree River, Columbia served as the governmental and educational center for South Carolina throughout the nineteenth century, and in 1860 it became the birthplace of the Confederacy when it hosted the South Carolina Secession Convention during which delegates voted unanimously to secede from the United States, becoming the first state to do so in the lead up to the American Civil War. Much of the city was destroyed when Union troops occupied it in 1865, but it was quickly rebuilt and became a leading center of commerce during the next century. Columbia is home to the University of South Carolina and was the location of Fort Jackson, the largest training facility for the United States Army.

The Columbia is the second Star Fleet vessel to hold this name, though nine ships of the United States Navy have held it, as well as one vessel of the Confederate States of America, two vessels of the Unites States space program, one vessel of United Earth Starfleet, and one Earth research vessel. The first ship to hold the name was a 44-gun frigate that was still under construction in 1814 at the Washington Navy Yard when it was burned to prevent advancing British troops from taking it. The second vessel to hold the name was a 50-gun sailing frigate launched in 1836 and in occasional service until 1861, when she was burned to avoid capture by Confederate soldiers. The third USS Columbia was a captured Confederate screw steamer that ran aground in 1863 while the fourth was a captured Confederate ironclad, CSS Columbia, which was built in 1864 and captured by the Union in 1865. It was used until June of that year. The fifth USS Columbia was a protected cruiser in service from 1894 to 1921. The sixth ship to carry the name was a converted cargo vessel that briefly served as a floating command post during 1921 to 1922 when it was returned to the merchant service. The seventh USS Columbia was a light cruiser launched shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 and was active throughout World War II. The eighth ship to carry the name was a transport oiler in the 1980s. The ninth USS Columbia was an attack submarine commissioned in 1995 and in service past 2010.

In 1969, the name Columbia was given to the command module of the Apollo 11 lunar mission, the first manned Earth mission to land on another celestial body. The Columbia module was commanded by astronaut Michael Collins while fellow astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin descended to the moon's surface in the Eagle lunar module. In 1975, construction began on the Space Shuttle Columbia, which became the first vessel in the program to launch into orbit in 1981. The Columbia completed 27 missions before being destroyed during re-entry in 2003, killing all seven crew members aboard. The Space Shuttle Columbia was named after both the Apollo 11 command module and after the sailing ship Columbia, a privately owned vessel under Captain Robert Gray which became the first American ship to circumnavigate the Earth. The Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest was named after the sailing ship, which was the first vessel to travel that waterway in 1792. A full-scale replica of the sailing ship Columbia was constructed in Disneyland in 1958 and continued to operate past 2010, with the vessel serving as its own ride plus doubling as Captain Hook's pirate ship in the long-running Fantasmic! nighttime extravaganza.

In 2154, United Earth Star Fleet launched the Columbia, NX-02, the second such vessel to have the warp 5 engine, after the Enterprise, NX-01. The NX-02 was commanded by Captain Erika Hernandez. The Earth research vessel SS Columbia was launched in the early 23rd century. It crashed on the planet Talos IV in 2236. In 2254, the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701, under command of Captain Christopher Pike, detected what appeared to be a distress signal from the Columbia coming from the planet. Beaming down, the crew discovered a group of survivors, but it was soon revealed that they were elaborate illusions created by the Talosians for the purpose of kidnapping Captain Pike. The incident caused the imposition of General Order 7, preventing anyone from approaching or making contact with the planet under penalty of death.

The first USS Columbia under the Federation Star Fleet was a Hermes-class scout in service during the late 23rd century. The current USS Columbia was launched on Stardate 241101.09 and assigned to the 2nd Fleet. Used to conduct both fast strike and special operations missions in conjunction with SFSOCOM (Star Fleet Special Operations Command), the frigate saw much action inside Romulan territory against the Romulan terrorist organization the Uihvueri and against the Tal'Shiar in the lead-up to the Fourth Romulan Civil War. Shortly before that war began, in Stardate 241403. the Columbia was decommissioned as part of political maneuvering within the 2nd Fleet. The frigate was then stolen by some members of its crew and taken on a rescue mission to retrieve their commanding officer, who had been arrested by the Tal'Shiar as a war criminal. Upon returning to Federation space, the ship was transferred fully to SOCOM and refitted, being put back into operation again in Stardate 241501 and assigned to Area 42.

In Stardate 241801, the Columbia was temporarily taken out of service due to an infestation of unknown organisms and the ship's officer assigned to the USS Apparition.

Notes on Technology

  • As of Stardate 241201.16, the Columbia has been equipped with stealth technology. Designed by SFSOCOM engineers, the device is a modified version of the stealth technology tested in the vessel's Type 9X stealth shuttlecraft, the Eidolon. The original technology featured light-bending abilities that made the shuttlecraft invisible to the naked eye as well as sensor interference technology that allowed it to mimic the conditions that produce sensor glitches and ghosts on the equipment of most known governments and manufacturers. It did not fully hide itself, however, in accordance with the Treaty of Algeron. After the destruction of Bajor and several key Federation facilities by an unknown and potentially new enemy, the decision was made to upgrade the Eidolon's tech. The sensor interference technology was replaced by a more advanced version that effectively hid its target from detection by all known sensor systems. The technology was expanded and applied to the Columbia as well. The Type 1X Stealth Device, as it is officially known, is highly classified and cannot be engaged in the presence of other vessels.
  • The Columbia features advanced sensor and computer technology, most of which is still somewhat experimental, as well as ablative armor, deviating from the standard configuration of a frigate and in line with its operational sphere.
  • The Columbia's computer system also features an advanced AI personality, named Ike, designed to replace the computer's traditional interactive mode. Ike is still in development, however, and currently does not fully replace the traditional mode but operates in tandem with it. He only responds when called.

How Points Are Awarded

1.1 Monthly Points
1.1.1 Players are expected to post a minimum of twice weekly. Each post made by a player will count as 50 points towards their monthly total (up to a total of 400 points).
1.1.2 Qualifying posts must be written with full paragraphs and contain detail. Short posts of three or four lines will not be counted towards the monthly total.
1.1.3 Additional points of up to 100 will be awarded for quality of posting.

1.2 Department Head Points
1.2.1 Department Heads receive up to 100 positional points each month for performing the duties required of them in the Constitution. In order to earn those points, DHs must turn in points recommendations for their department along with an RPGer nomination by the end of the 18th each month, site time.
1.2.2 If a DH has not submitted points by that deadline, they will be docked 50 points. They then have until the end of the 21st, site time, to submit them or risk losing all positional points for the month.
1.2.3 DHs who fail to turn in the required points and RPGer nomination by the end of the 21st will receive no positional points for the month.
1.2.4 Site time refers to the time shown on the main board.

Leaves of Absence

2.1 If a player is to be away from the site for more than 7 days, they are required to announce a Leave of Absence, either by posting on the ship or by sending an email to their superior officer.
2.2 Players whose LOA causes disruption of the game will have their characters hijacked at the CO's discretion to help move along the plotline.
2.3 Players who request LOA will have the twice weekly posting quota waved, but they must make a minimum of 8 posts during the month to receive the full 400 points.
