The Talarian Republic was the independent Talarian state, now a member of the Cardassian Union. While the Talarian political structure is still rigidly patriarchal, where a woman could never outrank a man, since its joining with the Union it has started to change. War plays an important role in Talarian culture, and warrior-like behavior is strongly encouraged in males.

Despite being nominally a republic, the Talarian military is the strongest institution within the government, with the commander-in-chief being the de facto head of state. He leads a council of state, made up of other leading dignitaries from the various branches of Talarian life - business and technology leaders, mostly, along with other military leaders.

Early History

The Talarians became warp-capable sometime before the mid-23rd century, by which time they had launched the first form of the Talrian warship for defense of their territory. First contact with the United Federation of Planets came sometime prior to the 2260s.

During the mid-24th century, the Talarian Republic was involved in a series of small skirmishes with the Federation, most notably the Galen Border Conflict, which lasted at least until 2356. Talarians fought even though their military technology was drastically inferior to the Federation's. Having mostly come in conflict with only minor races that were at best on par with their technologies, these conflicts led to the formation of a modernization movement on Talar, though it took several years to gather momentum.

In 2367, the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D discovered a small Talarian observation craft (likely used as a training ship for young Talarian warriors) adrift in Sector 21947. The craft had developed a serious radiation leak in its propulsion system, and Dr. Beverly Crusher's team evacuated the survivors, including a human youth named Jono, to the Enterprise. Soon after, the Talarian warship Q'Maire, commanded by Endar, along with two sister warships, intercepted and surrounded the Enterprise in the hopes of forcing the release of Jono, Endar's adoptive son. An armed conflict was averted when Captain Jean-Luc Picard decided to return Jono to the Talarians.

Following the end of the Dominion War, the Federation established a space station, Deep Space 10, near the Talarian border in order to monitor recovery efforts inside the Cardassian Union. Having sent observers to the Doiminion War on the side of the Federation, the returning officers added strength to the call for modernization.

Recent History

After a brief internal political struggle, Endar became the Commander-In-Chief of the Talarian Republic. With his experiences with the Federation, he moved for closer ties, though he rebuffed several cultural envoys that sought to help improve the Republic with various institutional changes. He did, however, begin to invest more heavily in education and technological development, trying to pull the Republic into the modern age by their bootstraps.

While numerous advances were made during the 2380s, Endar was disappointed with the progress that Talarian scientists were making. His drive to make Talarian technology equal that of the Federation or even the Cardassians was not bearing the fruit he desired, making their ships much improved, but still only equivilant to those of the Federation at it's founding, or at best early 23rd century technology. It simply wasn't producing fruit like he desired, and he was dying.

On his deathbed, Endar instituted a new program, authorizing the purchase of old ships from the various powers across the quadrant. Most were mothballed from their navies, some came secondhand through the Ferengi, but all would be valuable. Once Elnor became Commander-In-Chief in the 2390s, he fast-tracked these purchases and funneled several of them to Mendoir Systems, the largest of Talar's research corporations. Other corporations soon became involved, and they all began to reverse engineer the systems they found.

The Talarians stayed internally focused, defending their territory but not venturing outside except for their purchases of more ships, until after the Krynar War. Near the turn of the 25th Century, the Cardassian Union invaded the unclaimed space between the Union and the Republic. Having seen the Cardassian's agressions throughout the 24th century, the Talarians decided they could not simply wait and see what they would do. The Republic moved into that same unclaimed space, and began skirmishing with the Cardassians. The Cardassian/Talarian War only lasted a matter of hours before they capitulated, formally joining the Cardassian Union.
