Personal History

Jez is the youngest of four children, Her mother is a Betazoid and her father a Vulcan, neither one follows their society's customs to any extreme, for example, her mother never followed the Betazoid Tradition of ringing a gong while eating, though her mother did mention being associated with the Sixth house from time to time and her father followed logic, but in a manner that did not consume his life entirely. He did use logic to build his career, but not dominate it; as did most Vulcans. Both of her parents are respected, Archaeologists. Jez grew up in the field with her family, exploring ancient ruins on many worlds. When she was younger she enjoyed going on digs with her parents, but as she got older her mind looked towards the future, not the past, she wanted excitement, she wanted the future and all that it held. Her siblings on the other hand pursued work in the arts and business, her sister T’Paal is an artist living on Betazed, her brother Koss works at the Vulcan Ministry of Terraforming, and her brother Stadi is, well he is still trying to find himself, he has worked as a Freighter Pilot, a Irrigation Technician, a Radio D.J.much to the worry of their parents. It’s not that her parents didn’t care, it’s just they focused mostly on their work, often claiming that Archeology is very competitive.

Sometimes Jez and her family would spend months in cramped ships en route to new dig sites or explore other Scientist's findings, As a result, Jez knew her way around a starship, but her parents made sure she kept up with her studies, granted most of her time was spent being taught by a Hologram, or one of the other members of her parent's Archeological team. Sometimes the other kids of the team members studied with her, but that was rare.

When an excursion was deemed too dangerous for the children, Jez was left with her Grandmother Kejara, her mother's mother on Betazed. Kejara was a wonderful woman, kind, good-natured, and an avid reader, especially mystery novels, she found them fascinating, especially Terran Mystery novels, the murders, the intrigue, and the suspense. Kejara said it helped order the mind, to help it focus, to pay attention to details. Kejara usually figured out who the killer was in the first few chapters. Jez and her grandmother did the normal things that all Grandparents did with their Grandchildren, like going to the Zoo, visiting Botanical Gardens, and playing card games, but both Jez and her Grandmother loved roaming bookstores and searching for older books. Whenever Jez had a problem she could always ask Kejara and her grandmother always had the best advice. Jez often felt as if her parents' work came before her, that in her parent's eyes, she felt that she just wasn’t that important, but her grandmother treated her as if she was the most important person in the galaxy. Jez was devastated when her beloved grandmother died in a shuttle accident.

Being a child of two telepathic races, brought with it mixed blessings, Jez could sense strong emotions and could communicate with most telepaths, but she wasn’t comfortable with it, mostly because most beings thought more than one thing at a time. So, Jez wasn’t sure what the other person's actual thoughts were at any given moment. Her mother on the other hand was so comfortable with it, it was scary. Yes, using telepathy has its advantages, but spending six months in a remote jungle digging in the dirt looking for pottery fragments in total silence because everyone was speaking telepathically could be unnerving. Not to mention it felt like an invasion of privacy.

Jez wanted something more exciting out of life, granted she was proud and honored that her parents enjoyed Archeology, and were well respected in their field but she wanted excitement and adventure, she wanted to see far-off places, and exotic races. Yes, Archeologists indeed discover new and unknown cultures and civilizations, but those cultures were long dead, the only thing left of these cultures were ruins and tombs, forcing people to speculate as to their daily lives. Whereas full-living cultures were more exciting, you read the literature, examine their art and you understand these people's lives, not guessing what it might have been. You could speak with the people, understand their grammar and syntax, and you could understand their humor. You could talk with them they could share their culture with you, but in a bygone civilization so much was missing; you unearth a bowl or a vase, you often make an assumption, were these used for basic domestic use, eating, food processing, etc or were they used in a religious capacity, or were they just a simple decoration?

Jez didn’t have a conventional childhood, while the other Archeologists had kids, most of them were left with relatives only, and a few had their kids with them all year. Jez’s best friend Ena, a Vulcan, was the daughter of T’Ree and Skel, two more Archeologists. Jez and Ena explored the area that their parents would dig. Being small children, the girls could often enter small openings that the adults couldn’t, or that the tricorders couldn’t penetrate, the girls had fun crawling into earthquake-ravaged buildings and recording what they found inside after their parents deemed it was safe to do so. They knew that in many instances, they weren’t needed, but their parents wanted them to be engaged, to make them feel as if they were part of the team. When it wasn’t safe, the girls spent their time taking holo images of the plants and trees and the wildlife, hiking, swimming, and reading. When not enjoying nature studies, she trained in Martial Arts with Denton, Mike Denton, a gruff-looking, retired Starfleet Security Officer, Mike was the husband of T’Kana, a beautiful Vulcan linguist, she knew over a dozen languages including Vulcan, Klingon, Romulan, Deltan, Cardassian, Bajoran, Rigelian, just to name a few. Jez knew that opposites attract, T’Kana was thin and incredibly good-looking, and her voice was soft like an angel's. Mike on the other hand was average height but was kind of chubby, not unsightly, but maybe if he didn’t drink so much Terran Whiskey and spared more, but Mike and T’Kana were in love. Jez had, to be honest, had a little crush on Mike when she was younger.

The first year for all cadets consisted of the core classes, Star Ship operations, Federation History, First Contact, Chain of Command, and General Protocol. The First year at the Academy for many is make or break time. Lots of students can’t handle the pressure of life in Star Fleet, but Jez loved the challenge.

Jez Year One at the Academy: Jez found it a bit awkward at first, she was used to spending her time with small groups of people digging and exploring ruins, often on hostile worlds, in some instances, there were dangerous animals, even hostile natives, not to mention they would run across booby traps in some of these ruins, add to it some climates on these worlds were brutal. These long-dead people wanted to protect their wealth in the world beyond and Safety and Security were important for the Archeologists. So for Jez to go from being around groups of ten to thirty people to being at Starfleet Academy with hundreds even thousands of people was a bit overwhelming, but she quickly settled in and found her niche, she excelled in Federation History, she found the class very enjoyable. She particularly enjoyed the Federation Klingon Cold War.

Jez Year Two at the Academy: Year two was different for certain, Jez enjoyed her studies, she declared Security as her major, and she found it challenging. In Security, you never know what might or might not be safe. Is that person wearing a monk's robe an enemy insurgent or spy? StarFleet Security teaches one many valuable skills. Jez’s second year had its downside. In the fall of that year, Jez was fighting in the Alpha Quadrant Karate Championships, she was fighting against Motte a female Bolian of exceptional skill, and the match went back and forth Motte would score a point, then Jez. This went on for a solid hour until Jez dodged a savage blow and swept the Bolian’s leg right out from under her, winning the match.

Jez Year Three at The Academy: Year three for many cadets is an incredible time. You got a taste of your chosen field, Your professor reviewed grades, reviewed the other professor’s comments, and assigned you to your six-month-long training assignment. Jez was assigned as a Security Guard at the Federation Embassy on Tellar Prime, the homeworld of the Tellarites. To say that the Tellarites like to argue was an understatement. The Tellarites would argue about arguing, they even had books on arguing, it was a very long six months. Jez found it to be a valuable learning experience, she learned how to see something from someone else's point of view. Not to mention that the Tellarites often used insults to provoke an argument, which taught Jez to deal with people.

Jez Year Four at The Academy: The final year, while normally a happy one for most cadets, Jez found it to be very difficult. At the beginning of her fourth year, Jez received news that her best friend Ena had been killed while on a dig near the edge of Federation Space. Ena set off a booby trap while exploring a tomb, this sent Jez into a deep depression, as she and Ena were like sisters, they shared secrets, unlike her grandmother Ena and Jez were the same age and could relate to each other better, they had issues in common. Jez barely ate, kept to herself, and made a half heart effort at any of her Martial Arts. One day her Survival Training Professor, a Bajoran named Komet, told her that deaths do happen in StarFleet, no one likes them, but they do happen and in a mission, if your mind isn’t in the here and now, more lives could be lost. The best way to reduce the chances of that happening is just like in Archeology, to approach every mission in a slow methodical manner. Examining each component, examine the facts and take action based on that information. That is something her parents would say. After that, she felt better. Komet told her that she can take all the safety protocols, research all the information, and still someone can die. One of her Klingon classmates reminded her to honor Ena’s memory to excel at her duties. Jez did just that, she studied hard and got straight “A’s” in every class.

The final year for many cadets is bittersweet. You make friends over the last four years and chances are you will be assigned to a different posting, in some cases you will never see those friends again, but that was life in StarFleet.
