The USS Intrepid fought several battles and was the first ship to score a kill with this new enemy the Krynar, thanks to a new weapon devised by Star Fleet. Jayal found herself frightened and confused, confounded all that had happened to her since her mother’s death. The Intrepid was almost  destroyed in the battle, for the first time she was truly afraid and her mind collapsed under the weight of all the pain and hurt she had suffered in her life. She spent months in therapy until she was deemed fit for duty again.

Returning to duty in late 2413, the USS Intrepid was assigned as escort for Vice President Prenn to negotiations on the recently occupied Tellar Prime.  The Intrepid was meant to gather as much intelligence as possible on the enemy. Jayal was assigned to an away team which soon after arrival on the Planet's surface soon lost contact with the Intrepid. Unfortunately, a transport inhibitor had been set up so they could not beam back to the ship. The Intrepid did receive contact allegedly from the Vice President, although there was no way to verify. Jayal's memory of what happened next is very vague and the negotiation records are classified.  The entire Star Fleet away team save Lieutenant Darmar was reported MIA. Jayal was the only member of the away team to return to the Intrepid. The Vice President and his security detail were all accounted for.  Since then if asked her only comment is that she has a bad feeling about that Vice President.

At age 31 Jayal retired from Star Fleet. She was worn out. She moved to a Federation planet Nivoch near the Cardassian border in the hope that one day she may find her father. She began a career as a writer of Cardassian poetry and prose. She struggled to make a living but did have some minor success with one book of poems called "Living a life".

Supplementing her meagre income by engineering on freighters, she became well known and trusted in the freighter community based around Nivoch and she was able to work on a semi-regular basis. She had hope through these connections she would eventually hear something of the fate of her father’s family and possibly her father. Unfortunately, in the very little third or fourth hand news she received, her family was never mentioned.

In 2415 she began to have doubts about her abilities as a writer of poetry and realised that her talents truly lay as an engineer. But mainly the lack of income as a poet set her on a path to Earth to re-join Star Fleet.

Looking like a Cardassian didn’t help. Born on Cardassia Prime and with the Cardassian Union closed and hostile to the Federation, it was like the Federation had forgotten her seven years of distinguished service in Star Fleet.  The fact she had been a Federation citizen since she was 12 when she and her Bajoran mother escaped the Cardassian Union immediately before the borders where closed. Or the fact that the Cardassians had destroyed their ship the “Genorex” and killed all on board and left her mother, Jayal and 10 others for dead didn’t seem to carry a lot of weight. Star Fleet interviewed Jayal on several occasions and did extensive background research, looking for any information that would confirm their suspicion that she was a Cardassian attempt to plant a spy in Star Fleet. However, the truth prevailed and she was eventually accepted into the refresher course for returning Star Fleet Officers.

She spent the next two year upgrading her skill in the Academy under constant scrutiny.

She was being watched, she knew it, and she made sure she didn’t step out of line. Or was that her Cardassian genes being a little xenophobic? She did everything she could to gain the trust of Star Fleet as a valued officer but there where those who remained suspicious.

The night after graduation, having a quiet drink with two friends, it all nearly came to an end. Her most critical fellow student, a drunken John Brown, came from across the bar and broke up the celebration with a tirade of insults toward Jayal and her Cardassian loving friends. Jayal tied to leave, and John Brown struck her from behind. A brawl broke out and Jayal’s friends came to her aid. All that this accomplished was Jayal’s demotion to Ensign along with her two friends. John Brown received 30 days in the brig and the others involved from 10 to 20 day in the brig.

She was reassigned to her old ship. That wasn’t a problem until she read the USS Intrepid was now based at the newly commissioned 'Pioneer Outpost' in unknown space beyond the Cardassian Union. Perhaps someone in Star Fleet saw a Cardassian as an asset in a Star Fleet vessel on the other side of the Cardassian Union? Perhaps it was a way of isolating a Cardassian looking Star Fleet Office who may be a spy? Only those who made the decision will ever know.

Personal History

In the Federation year 2365, Jayal’s grandmother Jarnoo, a Bajoran woman, gave birth to Jayal’s mother Katell on Cardassia Prime. Jarnoo had been taken by force from Bajor, whilst she was pregnant with Katell, during the Cardassian occupation of Bajor which ended in 2369. Jarnoo was indentured to an Obsidian Order officer named Ebran Kallor. She never saw her husband again and Katell would never know her father. The next years for Jarnoo and her child where hard, but things looked up in 2371 when a treaty was signed with Bajor, it looked as though Jarnoo and Katell would be repatriated to Bajor. That same year the Obsidian Order collapsed after a failed attempt to stop a Dominion invasion and Ebran was killed at the battle of the Omarion Nebula. Jarmoo was left to beg and hide from the Dominion as they annexed Cardassia, and she eventually lost her life in 2375 when the Dominion attempted a complete genocide of Cardassia. Katell at age 10 survived and was left to fend for herself.

Cardassia was plagued with death and disease after such long periods of war. In the midst of this tragedy and turmoil Katell saw some kindnesses. She was taken in by the progressive Cardassian Darmar family. The Darmar family managed reasonable well in the midst of the crisis on Cardassia, even though the next years where a struggle, as Cardassia slowly tried to redevelop. Katell fell in love with the Darmar’s son, a military officer Glinn Kaddon Darmar and she gave birth at aged 19 to their love child. Jayal was born in the Federation year 2383.

Those who could afford an education paid a high price in the new Cardassia. Katell and Jayal received an education thanks to the good will of the Darmar family. Most of Jayal’s early years were spent with her mother Katell. Jayal excelled in the sciences, beyond her years.

In 2390 Cardassia was again plunged into war which continued for five long years. The First General War of the Alpha quadrant saw Jayal’s happy life change rapidly, especially on the night she turned ten. She was ushered out of the house with her mother and other members of the Darmar family by Cardassian authorities and incarcerated in jail for two years. Every member of the Darmar family had been arrested and all of their known assets were seized. Kaddon’s father was accused of war crimes against Cardassia and treason, committed during the Dominion annexation. Some said that’s why the Darmar family had done so well after the earlier Dominion war. The family members where constantly questioned. Questions that Jayal would not and could not answer.

Finally at the end of the First General War, Kaddon, Katell and Jayal were released. Kaddon gathered up all the gold pressed Latinum he could amass. He sent Katell and Jayal away on an old merchant vessel, the “Geonrex”. Within hours of them leaving Cardassia Prime, the Cardassian Union’s boarders where closed as Cardassia assumed an isolationist policy. Like her mother, Jayal would never see her father again. Kaddon remained to defend his father.

The “Geonrex” was one of the last vessels to leave Cardassian space, full of fleeing Cardassians, who disagreed with the current regime and policies. It was the USS Sydney, investigating sensor readings of weapons fire on the Federation side of Cardassian boarder that found the debris field of the “Geonrex” with twelve survivors in various escaped pods. Katell and Jayal was among them. The surviving refugees were taken to a processing camp on Bajor. It took a year before they were released.

Jayal lived with her mother on Bajor, suffering the stigma of looking too much like a Cardassian. Many Bajorans had not forgotten the 59 year Cardassian occupation of Bajor. Stubborn as she was, this only made Jayal want to be more Cardassian, as she began to reject her Bajoran heritage. Studying the ancient Cardassian culture of the Hebitians and Cardassian history, she became an accomplished poet inspired by the ancient works of Iloja of Prim. She was sure that one day she would be allowed back into Cardassia to find her father. Because of the death and destruction so prominent in Cardassian history, Jayal turn her attention to medicine. She also became interested in Starfleet after reading of Starfleet officers involved in Cardassian history, like Jean-Luc Picard's incarceration and release, Captain Sisco's lightship, and especially the case of Miles O’Brien. Whilst in university on Bajor she met Vet Qualor. They became lifelong friends, and he developed in her a keen interest in engineering and computers.

Seeing Starfleet as a possible road to her objectives in life, restoring the noble qualities of the Hebitian culture to the Cardassian species, finding her father, and generally restoring the reputation of Cardassians, she was accepted into the Starfleet Academy on Earth as an Engineering Cadet in 2406

Jayal's first mission on the Dauntless, to help with the reunification of Vulcan and Romulus, was a near disaster. The ship was boarded by renegade Vulcans and it took some time to recapture. Jayal, with other members of the crew, was awarded a Romulan Medal for their efforts in completing the mission, which she accepted with some reluctance and resented because it was Romulan.

Returning to Star Base Bravo she immediately set out on a quest to find her father, and hired some smugglers to provide a way into the isolated and closed Cardassian Union. This nearly cost Jayal and her mother their lives. After the star dust of this incident settled Jayal was transferred to the Cardassian boarder to Space Station Sierra 18.

Jayal remained on Sierria 18 unto the day it was destroyed. The Alpha quadrant was suddenly attacked by an unknown enemy destroying the Bajorian system, Jayal’s mother and everyone on the planet. Space Stations Charlie and Sierra 18 and several other worlds where attacked and destroyed. Some of the crew of Sierra 18 including Jayal survived, and were reassigned to the USS Intrepid to continue the fight.

The USS Intrepid fought several battles and was the first ship to score a kill with this new enemy the Krynar, thanks to a new weapon devised by Star Fleet. Jayal found herself frightened and confused, confounded all that had happened to her since her mother’s death.
