Personal History
Zin was born Ptou'zin on Vulcan in 2365 to parents who supported the Vulcan Temple of Amonak and because of a promise made after the tragic, senseless death of Ptou'zin's brother Ruark, they gave and support her, their second child, to the temple of Amonak for training and eventual priesthood. She was aged five when she entered the temple to be raised and trained by temple priests and priestesses. This was not a logical decision but it satisfied a need to make something very positive out of their first child's senseless death. No other action would satisfy their intense desire.
She was immediately enrolled into the Vulcan Science Academy by the High Priest Farock for a formal education before she began her training for priesthood.
The Cloister renamed her 'Zin' and she prefers to be called by this name although she uses her full name for formal introductions and occasions. She met a Vulcan male named Shock at the Science Academy and formed a deep friendship. Each study break from her formal education she returning to reside with the temple cloister.
Refusing an academic posting offered by the Vulcan Science Academy, at age twenty-one she began her training as a priest, to fulfil her parent's promise. Attaining priesthood, she experienced the rite of Tal'oth surviving 4 months alone in the Vulcan desert and years later her third attempt she reached the distinguished position as a Vulcan Master, successfully completing the Kolinahr.
She had a very happy and productive life as a priestess of the temple of Amonak and was often sort for her advice. She was well respected by her colleagues and the general community.
Her life changed completely five years before she joined Star Fleet. She was arrested for the murder of the only father she really knew, Farock, High Priest of the Temple of Amonak. The court heard that she was found unconscious beside his body and about an hour before his death she was seen to be in a fit of "uncontrolled rage." Zin had suffered no physical or mental illness that would result in this loss of control.
The Vulcan Medical Database states that "Pon farr can occur either naturally or it can be induced. Only Vulcan males enter pon farr naturally. Females must be induced, usually by physical or telepathic contact, though it can be brought on by other outside factors, such as disease or a period of intense emotions."
Irrefutable scientific evidence was produced by the prosecution to show that Zin had experienced pon farr a short time before Farock's death. This could be explained by witness accounts of her uncontrollable rage prior to Farock's death.
Her defender argued that there was no motive for her to kill Farock. She had never shown lack of emotional control in her life. The only other cause of pon farr in a female was that it was induced by telepathy. This had to be extremely aggressive give Ptou'zin stature in Vulcan logic and emotional control. It was the only logical explanation of the facts. She was telepathically violated by someone that caused her pon farr and that caused her to be in an uncontrollable rage that night. But did she murder Farock? There being no forensic evidence linking her or anyone else to the actual murder, except that she was found unconscious beside the murder victim meant that the prosecution's case was circumstantial at best. There was very reasonable doubt.
The court eventually found that "Ptou'zin, whilst most likely under the influence of telepathic suggestion did experience pon farr. However, this was not conclusive proof, beyond reasonable doubt, that she had murdered Farock." She was acquitted. The trail had taken four years out of her life and stained her character for ever.
Many Vulcans disagree with the decision and Zin knew that with this cloud overshadowing her she could not stay at the Temple. A year later she made the decision to leave Vulcan and join Star Fleet, train as an investigator and eventual solve the mystery of the brutal murder of her beloved friend, the High Priest of Amonak, who had taken her in as a child against the advice of many. She would find his murderer.
In the meantime, she would begin a new life following many other distinguished Vulcans as an officer in Star Fleet.
Assigned to the USS Columbia, Zin's first mission was to Klingon Space chasing information about a deadly virus that could be used against all Vulcanoids, developed specifically to wipe out the Romulan species. The Columbia crew came up against both Klingons and Romulans where Zin distinguished herself, was awarded the SFCM and was promoted to Lt(JG) Chief of Security on their return to base. Their return placed them in the middle of a Star Fleet civil war and the Columbia Crew tried to keep neutral.
Ptou’zin’s second mission took more than a year. Columbia travelled to Volchok Prime to purchase an extremely dangerous weapon. During the later phase of the mission, just as the away team was to pick up their purchase, a Ferengi tried to steal the delivery truck with the weapon. A fire fight erupted with police and others in which Zin again distinguished herself. Unfortunately, a crew members, Mid Lewis, had his own idea of what to do. Under extremely dangerous condition, when confronted by Zin, whilst he was tampering with the weapon's locked carry case, he refused Zin’s direct order to move away. She immediately shot him with her phaser, stunning him into unconsciousness. This enabled the crew to make a very quick exit with the weapon, back to Columbia.
After a review of away team mission and shooting, the Captain reported that ‘Ptou'zin had acted in good faith to salvage the mission’, and there was no formal reprimand.
