Personal History

Born in Kamakura, Japan, Ai Yamazaki grew up in a typical middle-class family. Always ahead of the curve in school, she made few friends and was often ostracized for being smart. She later followed in the footsteps of her father, who had served in Star Fleet for several years, and applied to Star Fleet Academy, where she studied to be a doctor.

After graduation, she was stationed at Star Base Alpha. There she met her future husband, Lieutenant James Clark. After a short and stormy marriage, in which she discovered that he had been unfaithful to her, she divorced him and applied for a transfer. Accepting a position on Star Base Charlie, soon after her arrival she began to notice impairment in her motor control. She began to experience tremors and cramps, and she became quite clumsy. A self-diagnosis revealed that she had developed Harrington’s Disease, a variant of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (better known as ALS, or Lou Gherig’s disease) first recognized in the 22nd century. A civilian doctor confirmed her fears. The disease was consider incurable and terminal, though treatment would allow her to control her symptoms. She was given about ten years to live.

She took the news hard, though she accepted her fate with stoicism. Afraid that she would be given a desk job, she opted to keep her condition a secret from Star Fleet for as long as she could. She also decided to make the best of what time she had left. Feeling that she had wasted much of her life thus far, she asked to be transferred to a starship, where she might at least get the chance to explore the universe and experience new things. She was assigned to the USS Gettysburg, where she soon found herself serving as Acting Chief Medical Officer.

Ai spent a lot of her time studying the latest medical research journals, and she soon learned that a possible cure for her condition had been developed by the Romulans. During the subsequent shore leave after her appointment to the Gettysburg, she traveled to Rigel V, where the author of the article worked for a research facility. He provided her with a copy of a Romulan medical journal that had been smuggled out of the Star Empire and gave her his contact name. Traveling to the Romulan Neutral Zone, she hired a pilot to take her to the Romulan colony world of Tegra to meet the contact in hopes of learning more. Her trip, though dangerous, was successful, and she returned with data on several studies of a Romulan disease similar to her own.

Back on the Gettysburg, she declined the permanent position of Chief Medical Officer in favor of creating and heading a research department on the ship, where she followed up on the Romulan studies related to Harrington's Disease as well as worked on other projects. She later left the Gettysburg though and took a similar position on Star Base Bravo. Her efforts were successful in that she was able to retard the development of her condition, though she has yet to find a way to completely cure it. She will at least have the chance to live a longer lifetime than she had anticipated.

Her work in medical research earned her a high security rating, as she was often consulted on sensitive matters. In 2412, that rating led her to a temporary assignment on the USS Columbia, a special operations vessel which found itself without a medical officer just prior to its launch on a classified mission. SOCOM contacted her at the last minute and asked her to take the position, as she was the only doctor available on the base who had a current security rating high enough to qualify. Deciding it would be a nice change of pace from her research work and always willing to help when asked, she accepted and quickly packed a bag and transported aboard.
