Personal History
Ana was born and raised on the Walpi Hopi reservation in Arizona on the Northern American continent on Earth. One evening while her parents were visiting relatives on the far side of the reservation, they were involved in a personal vehicle accident and were both killed. Ana and her older brother John were adopted by the village elder and raised collectively by the rest of their small village. They were raised in the traditional ways of the Hopi tribe, and taught to respect ‘the old ways’.
Afforded education, Ana became interested in the physical sciences and always wondered how to reconcile them with the spiritual and traditional beliefs she had been raised with. By the strong urging of many of her instructors, upon graduation from secondary schooling, Ana applied to and was accepted to Starfleet Academy. At The Academy Ana became engrossed in the learning resources available to cadets and quickly chose to specialize in the Tactical Division. The combination of cutting edge technology with the ancient biological and spiritual assets of the humanoid mind intrigued her tremendously, and she threw herself into her studies. She applied herself with equal zeal to meeting the variety of new people that were her fellow cadets. Her tactical, academic, and social mind was expanded ten-fold in just one year as a cadet.
After her first year, Ana returned to the reservation a very changed young woman. She initially felt that she could change the ways she learned to think were backward and outdated, even though she’d been raised to believe in them. Instead, during a conversation with the village’s spiritual leader, she agreed to undergo her first vision quest. Fully expecting to see the ritual as yet another outdated and backward belief, Ana was stunned when she actually had a spiritual experience of her own. During the quest Ana discovered her spirit guide, embodied by a Raven, and learned about herself and the mystical qualities of the universe around her. After discussing what she saw and felt with the spiritual elder and her brother John, as well as taking time by herself on a camping trip for several days in the desert, Ana decided that her beliefs she was raised with did not conflict with the new science and facts she had been engrossed with during her first year at the Academy.
Returning to San Francisco at the end of her leave, Ana had gotten two new tattoos and an entirely new perspective on her future. Instead of seeing Starfleet as an escape from her village and ancestral background, she saw it as a way of expanding herself and learning about the universe around her.
Ana graduated the Academy with reasonably high marks and was assigned to Star Base Bravo. During her first few months as the most junior of officers, her wide-eyed curiosity and compellingly pleasant personality allowed her to continue to soak up everything she was taught, just as she had done as a Cadet. Promoted to Ensign, Ana had shown a specific talent for the area of her Minor. She was put on the Flight Operations team and spent just as much of her time in either the command center at flight operations control, or as a duty pilot for the various auxiliary craft on the star base. Gaining a substantial degree of comfort with star base flight operations, Ana’s subsequently quick promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade inspired her to consider ways of advancing her career as a mid level officer. In time, she also began to plan to return to live on the reservation with her tribe after her time with Starfleet was done.
In the mean time, Ana volunteered for a tour onboard the Frigate USS Bangalore as the Assistant Chief Tactical Officer. With only one craft to pilot besides the ship itself, Ana was given a prime opportunity to hone the skills associated with the weapons officer side of the Tactical Division. While her first preference was to be piloting, or coordinating flight operations, Ana found she enjoyed the tactics and strategy associated with standing at the almighty weapons station on the bridge of a ship. As with her other pursuits, Ana’s interest fueled her success and was returned to the crew of Star Base Alpha after her temporary assignment with an official commendation from the skipper of the Bangalore, and unknown to Ana, a strong recommendation promotion to Chief Tactical Officer.
Combined with her stellar performance prior to, and following her tour on the Bangalore, the promotion recommendation was heeded and orders were drafted for a special assignment to a brand new ship, with a significant purpose. Within weeks of being placed as the Flight Operations Officer for all of Starbase Bravo, Ana received orders from Personnel Command to report to the Space Dock and board the newly commissioned Special Operations Frigate, USS Columbia, FF-6145. Her orders specified that she was to assume the post as Chief Tactical Officer.
