Personal History

Born to a fairly unimportant family on Bajor, Aarro Thyla grew up in a society still recovering from the Cardassian Occupation on their homeworld decades prior. While much of life had returned to a sense of normalcy, or at least the “new” normal, Thyla’s family ties to a Cardassian sympathizer, her grandfather Aarro Rhiga, led to a childhood of being largely ostracized by her peers. By the time they were teens, Thyla had only a few friends, and only one who she would consider to be a close friend; Zakhil Jaro. Jaro and Thyla remained friends through their time in school, bonding over a shared love of machines and space travel. Thyla’s fascination with this originally did not lead to her choice of career, being expected to follow in the footsteps of either her mother or father and become an artist or a chef, despite her ambivalent feelings on those topics. Throughout her childhood, her family would take frequent camping trips into the uninhabited areas of Bajor, during which Thyla spent most of her nights gazing up at the stars, and hoping one day to travel among them. On one such camping trip, when she was 11, Thyla was swimming in a river nearby their camping site, when an unexpected current grabbed her and nearly drowned her. Following that event, her greatest fear has been drowning, and swimming has become one of her least favorite activities, even many years later.

Through her teen years, Thyla grew increasingly interested in the inner workings of space travel, and especially warp theory. While her interest had already begun to grow beforehand, her first journey on a warp capable ship, for a short vacation to another world, solidified her interest growing into a passion, and eventually a career aspiration. Despite being 14 at the time that occurred, her father said she had the energy and excitement of a child when she was given a tour of the engineering bay of the ship. From that point onward, Thyla completely threw herself into studying engineering concepts and working towards a future in Star Fleet. Though Bajorans tended to keep to themselves, she did the best she could to interact with other cultures to prepare for a time when she would be living off-planet, among other people. Her interest in warp fields and warp theory, as well as her desire to end up at Star Fleet Academy led her to writing what would become an award winning paper in the “Under-18: Scientific” category, detailing the potential future applications of warp fields in areas beyond space travel. While the topic is something she now considers foolish, Thyla is intensely proud of the work put into and the recognition gained from her paper. Thyla and her brother were off-planet from Bajor when the planet was shifted 3 years into the future, and while their unease at the fate of the rest of their family has passed with the return of the planet, they now have to contend with the fact that they continued to age while their sister and parents did not.

The day she was accepted into Star Fleet Academy is a day that Thyla remembers as one of the best of her life, having devoted herself so entirely to the pursuit of being accepted, being able to see all of that work lead to a successful payoff was all Thyla could have asked for. Her time in the Academy saw her once again make only a few close friends, though she was on good terms with most of her classmates. Thyla did not quite excel in classes, but managed to complete her courses respectably, despite struggling with some of the less hands-on courses in the sciences department.
