History

Launched in 2399, the USS Artemis was one of the first of the Flight-II Vesta-class Explorers to be launched into service, utilising the most up-to-date technologies available. Under the command of Captain Tyra Crawford, she was assigned to test the new Quantum Slipstream Drive by flying to Pioneer Outpost, and along the way investigating a rogue planet discovered nearby. While the overall mission was a success, it ended in a terrifying discovery: the rogue planet was in actuality a gigantic Borg ship.

After a short recovery period, Starfleet assembled a task force to assault the newly-awakened Borg and put a stop to them before they could attack. Led by Admiral Thrawn on the Enterprise, the attack was overall a failure. The Megasphere itself was destroyed, but scores of support craft - regular sized spheres and probes - escaped, along with a pair of assimilated Doomsday Machines. Also, most of the ships attacking the Megasphere were lost, though fortunately the Artemis managed to escape without critical damage.

After repairs at McKinley station, the Artemis was assigned the prestigious position of leading the Pathfinder Expedition, a group of QSD-equipped vessels intended to return to the region where Voyager was last contacted by the original Pathfinder team. The stated goal was simply to explore, and to make contact with several of the races that Voyager had befriended in her time, and that was the intent. Unfortunately, the Expedition ran afoul of some engine troubles right on the last leg of the trip, and scattered around as they dropped out of Slipstream haphazardly. Artemis discovered a colony of Talaxians in an asteroid field, and quickly made contact. They were attempting to relocate to a new planet nearby, but were being raided by Kazon. Artemis assisted, and the Talaxians swiftly made home on what they now called New Talax in a nearby system.

Reuniting with the rest of the Expedition, Artemis began exploring. After hitting a mine, they found a small outpost and went there to try and effect repairs. The outpost was run by a small family of Kazon who had left the aggressive life behind, but they were being extorted by those same more aggressive kinsmen. The Artemis crew, having little choice due to their damaged engines, helped them to fight off the attacking Kazon, before finally being able to repair their ship and head back to New Talax, and then rotating home.

Once back in the Alpha Quadrant, the Artemis put in to Utopia Planitia to undergo repairs and testing, while several of her crew were placed on detached duty to Starfleet Security. This duty was classified, but only lasted a few days before they returned to the ship.
