Personal History

Born in Aleksandrovskaya hospital at the beating, artistic heart of Saint Petersburg, Russia, A’nessi grew up with love at the core of her family. Russia may not have been the first place one thought of to find a Caitian family rearing their litter, but it was as good a place as any.

A’nessi’s father, Miff Yairis, settled the family there after accepting a position within Saint Petersburg State University, a leading secondary school in the area. He took up the helm as a teacher of structural engineering, but he much preferred the term ‘architect’. Miff used to joke with A’nessi that he was a greater architect than god, because he actually existed. A’nessi like any young child, used to believe those claims and quickly put her father on an unattainable pedestal, the epitome of character in her mind. Her mother, E’leiss, the much more meek and humble one of the duo, spent her time raising the children at home and pursuing something she truly loved doing on the side. Every day, her and her mother worked in the minuscule greenhouse they had fashioned in their own backyard. A’nessi never much enjoyed gardening, but when she was young, she relished the time with her mother.

Finally coming of proper school age, A’nessi was okay in the early formative years. She got along well enough with others to an extent, but never really made many lasting friendships, except one. Not many would believe that a great friendship could come from two so different of personality, but Gregory and A’nessi proved the doubters wrong.

During one of the school’s mandated recess periods, a small boy, ruddy in appearance and innocent as a lamb was being tormented by some of the larger species and humans in the school. Face down in the dirt, he was crying as they pinned him and made him beg to be released. The brave and stupid soul he was, Gregory wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of his begging. All the students stood by and watched helplessly, not wanting to interfere. Having enough, A’nessi ran and pushed the lead bully as hard as she could, throwing him down to his rear with a thud. It proved to be a painful move for her as the bullies turned their attention away from the helpless boy and to the new aggressor.

Mercilessly, they began to kick and slap A’nessi to the ground, holding her defenseless and taunting her about everything under the sun. Species, gender, color, nothing was off limits to them as they beat her. Just as they had picked her up by the tail to inflict even more pain, a voice rang out from the mouth of the innocent, young Gregory. He would not beg for his sake, but that day, he begged for someone else’s. Eventually, they stopped, his pleas reaching them and finally a teacher as some of the other students grabbed the attention of the nearest one they could find.

Taken to the nurse’s station that day and waiting for their parents to pick them up, they both teased each other about how stupid the other had been and a quick friendship had formed there after. The two were inseparable, eating lunch, studying together and as they progressed through the years into middle and upper levels of education, rumors ran rampant about a possible romance. However, that was never the case, at least not for one of them.

Without realizing it, A’nessi had fallen for the young man. She couldn’t even recall when it happened. Had it been the time they pulled an all-nighter for a next day exam and they fell asleep telling jokes to each other after they couldn’t take the books any longer? When Gregory took her baby brother under his wing and played games while A’nessi watched from the family green house with her mother? Or, had it been that first day in the nurse’s station? It hardly mattered, because Gregory never shared those feelings. To him, she was just a friend, a person he loved, but like a sister. This pained her, but she kept holding out hope, even as Gregory starting dating elsewhere.

School itself was never the challenge. A’nessi was neither a superstar nor a dunce. What she lacked in natural mental acuity, she made up for in passion and instincts. There was a certain drive about her that always made her strive to better herself, to push harder and become what she wanted to be, somebody her father would be proud of.

As T’rol was born, her mother became despondent for many months with a post pregnancy separation anxiety that confined her to be by T’rol's side. It was then A’nessi’s job, at the age of ten to see that many of the household chores were tended to and meals prepared. Eventually, her mother did come to her senses and lighten her burden, but from that time, A’nessi had developed a strong and independent spirit.

There was never a calling the A’nessi aspired to when she thought about her future. What her father did was something that, while she respected, never wanted to do herself. Gregory on the other hand, adored the work and quickly followed in her own father’s footsteps. As they began to reach an age where life decisions start to make a lasting impact, Gregory joined the school her father taught at, but A’nessi was paralyzed by fear. Fear of the wrong choice and indecision.

For a year, she procrastinated and simply tended to the home with her mother, nightly mental torment finding her in her bed as she stared at the ceiling. A part of her knew that she always wanted to help people, even going back to that day during recess. An instinct for protection, even if it put her in harms way. But, still, she stalled and dabbled in things, such as landscaping, logistics and even food service. None of it grabbed her.

Of course, she had heard and known of Starfleet before, what’s its mission was and how and why people served in it. A peaceful, exploratory organization that seemed to look out for others’ best interests. To A’nessi, the more she thought about it, the more she believed it sounded like home.

Keeping her desire to join a secret, she worked hard to be accepted, pushing herself where she knew she lacked and brushing up in areas she didn’t. Finally, the day came where she was ready for Starfleet and Starfleet was ready for her. Tearfully, she parted ways with her family and Gregory, saying that their ‘goodbyes’ weren’t really permanent. But the change in dynamic was drastic even if she was still on Earth with them.

The Academy was something else entirely for A’nessi. A place where her drive and passion was equally matched by all the students and friendly competition fierce. Some classes she passed with flying colors, others by the skin of her feline teeth. She declared as a security major, an avenue she thought right up her alley. Science proved to be her failing, the hardest subject she encountered by far. Not impossible for her, but certainly requiring extra scrutiny and attention.

Four hard spent years at the Academy flew by, many spent with her nose in a study pad, but also some fun time with other students that roped her in. There were valiant successes, such as her marksmanship and tactical scores. As well as tremendous failures and mistakes, including the destruction of some valuable lab equipment as a sophomore and later, an ill-conceived senior prank on some freshman that may or may not have had their pants disintegrated in front of the school’s main walkway.

Even after those years of study and hard work, more was ahead. Work didn’t stop with the Academy and neither did proving herself. To be the type of girl that her father and herself would be proud of, the real work had just begun.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Security
Academy Minor(s): Tactical Analysis, Forensic Psychology and Investigation
Hobbies and Pastimes: Playing cards, ballet and photography.
Short-Term Goals: Fitting in with her crew, making an impact at her station and protecting others. Among others such as: mastering the art of counting cards, taking the perfect picture and making some genuine close friends.
Long-Term Goals: To be the chief security officer onboard a starship and make her way into Starfleet intelligence.
Personality: Strong but reserved, A’nessi is somebody that doesn’t let others get very close. With a strongly-felt internal sense of duty, which lends her a serious air and the motivation to follow through on tasks. Organized and methodical in her approach, she can generally succeed at most tasks if they catch her interest.

Loyal and dependable, she doesn’t make friends easily, but when she does, they are of the lasting sort. However, A’nessi would rather work alone or with a partner than an entire team. With a natural respect for facts, she despises liars and manipulators. A’nessi feels almost physical pain when tasked with expressing herself emotionally. Pain she does feel, strikes her to the core though. Often fiery and sassy, she can rub people the wrong way, but she never intentionally means people harm.
Sense of Humor: Sarcastic and a bit flippant. Does not enjoy slapstick or puns.
Phobias: Trypophobia = Fear of clustered holes and bumps. As a result, she has a hard time being around “bumpy” species. This gives her a general, icky or skin crawling feeling.
Likes: Music, different cultures, competitive sports and ballet.
Dislikes: People who can’t be serious when the situation calls for it. Doesn’t particularly care for Vulcans and their overbearing ways of logic.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: People who are late. Replicated borscht.
Bad Habits or Vices: Over reliance on caffeinated beverages instead of getting a good night’s sleep.
Achievements: None worth noting.
Disappointments: Not joining Starfleet sooner. Seeing Gregory move on without her.
Illnesses: None
Strengths: Driven, physically able, deduction skills and marksmanship.
Weaknesses: Advanced science, often insensitive, doesn’t make close friends easily, doesn’t always know when to stop.
Fears: Dying alone and disappointing her father/captain/crew.
Prejudices: Senior officers who are younger than her.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Pleated skirts, ruffled blouses and the occasional pair of dark denim jeans with a hole cut out for her tail. Like many of her species, she doesn’t enjoy wearing shoes.
Distinguishing Features: Round, soft cheeks that give the illusion A’nessi is far younger than she actually is. Growing up, she oft remarked how much she loathed them, especially when she was mistaken for a child in her teen years. These cheeks lend A’nessi the look of a Caitian five years younger on average. Black paws and tuft on the edge of her long and whip-like tail. This contrasts drastically with her albino fur.
Pets: None
Friends: Gregory Lagovitch (24, human, male) Gregory is currently learning under A’nessi’s father as an apprentice. From a young age, Gregory and A’nessi were inseparable. Gregory is the water to A’nessi’s fire. He is a determined and levelheaded young man, who knows what he wants and grabs it. Currently, he is engaged to a young woman by the name of Valentina Rabayeva; a fact the A’nessi still hasn’t quite come to terms with. She always viewed him as a best friend with the potential for something more, however, her extended feelings are unreciprocated by the young man. To him, she’s just his best friend Ness, a pet name he has called her since childhood when he couldn’t pronounce her name correctly due to his slight lisp.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The day she babysat her brother and he broke his arm by falling off the table under her care.
Best Time: Sneaking into the ‘lost, found and confiscated’ with Gregory after hours in high school and stealing back her pad that she got in trouble for using during class.
Most Crucial Experience: Sitting down and reading through a Starfleet digital brochure. In a way, that ten minutes of reading guided the last four years of her life and her coming future.
Role Model: Her father.
