Personal History

Emily was born aboard the S.S. Endeavour, a freighter run by Amanda and James Sloane. From a young age she was always tinkering with machines and gadgets, trying to create things that amused her or helped her shipmates. She was energetic and out-going, always had a spring in her step and never backed down from a challenge. She became close friends with another child, Daniel, who had been born on the ship to two of the crew a month before and they were rarely seen apart.

When she turned twelve her parents started having her work around the ship. Realising her passion for technology and making gadgets she was allowed to work in engineering with her father while her mother steered the ship. Over the next few months she had learned to fix and maintain almost every part of the ship's systems and had even modified them a few times to make them work better. She also began to create and tinker with more advanced gadgets, such as improving a watch and creating a robotic arm that was designed to move hazardous items around.

However when she was sixteen, disaster struck. Pirate attacks were not too common, but Emily had still occasionally worried about them. On that day, it happened. A small ship attacked their own, boarding their freighter with a small crew in an attempt to seize their cargo. The damage to the ship was bad, but they managed to break away from the pirates and jump to warp, largely due to their upgraded components. However, several of the crew had died fending off boarders and a few more were injured. Emily was amongst them. A disruptor shot had severed the lower part of her right arm. The ship fortunately had an experienced doctor and they were able to heal her arm but they could not clone a replacement, and it would be several months before they could get to a place that could. Emily refused to accept that. With some help from her parents she was able to remake the robotic arm she had made years ago into a crude prosthetic, and after an operation to attach the robotic arm to the stump, she could use her right hand again. It didn’t work very well to begin with, and Emily became noticeably more reserved and quiet from then on, rarely talking for hours and then only in short bursts. Therapy and training meant that after half a year she could move her robotic arm to do any task her real one could. Her personality never recovered however, and while she feels normal she still remains reserved.

She joined the Academy when she was eighteen, because she wanted to have access to the high level technology Star Fleet could provide her and to improve upon her skills as an engineer. Having worked constantly, tinkering and scavenging for parts, she had improved her right arm from the crude frame it had once been to a version that used top quality components and was hidden under a layer of metal. While she had been offered a cloned replacement, she refused, deciding instead to keep the robotic one as a reminder of what had happened. Often during cybernetics classes she would tinker with her own arm as a way to improve her skills, constantly trying to improve its performance. She graduated near the top of her class after four years, and was assigned to a ship almost immediately after.

After the Academy, she was made a Midshipman and assigned to the USS Athena, a Zeus Class Light Cruiser. She spent the next four years aboard the Athena, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. Emily enjoyed her time aboard the Athena, and made several close friends. Four years into her time aboard, the battle with the Borg Megasphere took place, resulting in Star Fleet recalling the ageing Athena to be decommissioned. After that, Emily drifted from assignment to assignment, rarely staying on one ship for more than a few months. She received a promotion to Lieutenant at the age of twenty seven whilst aboard the USS Forge, a TarHana Class Heavy Cruiser. Almost a year later, she was reassigned again, this time to the
USS Philadelphia.
