1492 – The Ensisheim meteorite, the oldest meteorite with a known date of impact, strikes the Earth in a wheat field in France.
1908 – Professor Rutherford announces in London that he has isolated a single atom of matter.
1932 – Buck Rogers in the 25th Century debuts on American radio. It is the first science fiction program on radio.
1996 – The Mars Global Surveyor takes off for a 435-million-mile journey to Mars. During its service, it made a number of key discoveries, including evidence of liquid water at or near the Martian surface.
