Personal History

James Ward was born on Midos V to Thomas and Eleanor ward, both career Starfleet officers; Thomas, an Engineer and Eleanor a doctor had been academy graduates and are still in active service. He only spent three years in the colony before his parents were transferred to a ship posting, the U.S.S Eisenhower. For the entirety of his childhood he followed his parents from one ship posting to another. As he grew older he would amuse himself with exploring whichever ship he found himself on and pushing the limits of what he could get away with. He did realize how lucky he was that he was able to see so many different worlds and races but was often jealous of other kids his age for having a yard and steady regular friends wishing for a sense of normalcy he saw in media.

Like so many who grew up in the same setting Jim wanted to follow in his parents footsteps. He applied to the Academy but because of how far flung his childhood was his education was always varying his application was denied citing poor academics. Undeterred he enlisted going into the Security Division and began to excel from the beginning. He was selected for one and then a subsequent five year mission filling his service jacket quickly with commendations from his various CO’s as well as department heads.

While he was on his first five year mission James met the woman who would become his wife, Margaret. Maggie was a tactical officer aboard the U.S.S Odyssey and there romance was fast and hot. The couple’s courtship was short and the Captain had married them by the end of the first year. The first couple years were good together though reflecting back Jim believes that was because of how distracted they were with work allowing them to continue on without really truly getting to know each other. By the end of the five year mission though things were starting to wear thin. They became more and more distant with each other and when they returned to Sol system they went their separate ways and subsequently signed up for different ship assignments. James was served divorced papers as he was boarding his assignment for his second five year mission.

The worst incident in his life happened during his second five year mission. While making first contact with an alien race they took offense to the away team’s demeanor, specifically how curious they were about this particular races lifestyle. James was a part of the team they choose to take custody and put on ‘trial’. This particular races judicial system involved putting the defendant through simulations of their worst fears and varying failures judging the person by their reactions and if they mentally survive the constant onslaught. Jim had been going through this for three days before the Captain was able to negotiate the away team’s release and it took him years to ‘recover’ though one could question if he truly fully recovered.

Upon returning from his second five year mission Jimmy took an extended leave, spending a little time with his parents who had been stationed at the fleet yards for several years now before spending some time on his own traveling Earth. He was able to see the majority of the places he had visited on the holodeck and see all of the sights humanities birth place had to offer decompressing from so much time spent in the fleet and all of the things he had seen. When his leave was over he applied for and was accepted to OCS (Officer Candidate School) realizing his goal of becoming an officer.

James has always found himself in the holodeck when it came time for recreation, a habit he picked up at an early age. He tends to prefer quieter nature settings, a cabin in the woods where he can fish or a warm tropical beach after sailing or getting lost in the latest holonovel. He prefers the time away from the majority of people because of just how ‘on’ he has to be when on shift. He is also one to host a card game or put together a competitive shooting tournament.

Professionally James is an accomplished marksman and has taken extensive training in hostage negotiations, active shooter scenarios and disaster relief missions. He has many of the training certificates offered by the fleet in investigation and interrogation techniques and has numerous solved investigations to his name.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Security- Investigation techniques and close quarter tactics
Academy Minor(s): criminal interrogation
Hobbies and Pastimes: James is a highly decorated marksman and has a borderline addiction to the holodeck where he prefers to spend his off time. James will either get lost in a holonovel or spend hours in a quiet setting. He also has done several orbital drop programs and has been lucky to jump four worlds so far.
Short-Term Goals: transition into being an officer from enlisted life
Long-Term Goals: Running his own department and eventually if he is lucky his own command
Personality: James is normally reserved preferring to speak only when he is sure of what he is saying. He is fiercely loyal but is slow to warm up to someone. Jim is well known for his patience but when angered he has a fiery temper which luckily fades quickly.
Sense of Humor: James, when comfortable, is a sarcastic wise cracker who prefers to be laughing.
Phobias: James cannot stand heights and while he will suck it up for a mission he will do anything to avoid them. The only exception is Orbital skydiving, a hobby he picked up in an attempt to break this fear with mixed results.
Likes: While interested in his job and the various subjects involved James also enjoys being a casual student of history. He is fascinated with transitional periods and how things change.
Dislikes: While he won’t admit it to anyone James is bitter about not being raised in one place and hates that he only finds comfort onboard a ship.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: James has increasingly grown to hate loud mouths and those who tend to show off. He has broken up enough bar fights to know who the trouble maker is in a crowd.
Bad Habits or Vices: James sometimes over uses the holodeck to escape. He is also a nail biter when idle or distracted.
Achievements: James has accomplished himself on the firing range as well as in his investigative techniques.
Disappointments: James always wished he had been afforded a traditional education and had been able to go to the Academy like so many others.
Illnesses: James only suffered the typical childhood diseases.
Strengths: James is a thinker and has been able to train himself to slow down and think his way through most situations.
Weaknesses: Because of his career to this point James has the bad habit of being quick to judge making snap decisions on a person’s character.
Fears: While heights ranks up there James number one fear is his failed marriage is a reflection on himself and if he can have a normal relationship. He worries he is damaged goods
Prejudices: James, having been an enlisted man for so long, has an interesting and most times negative view on officers especially those he sees as being green.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Either casual and comfortable or athletic depending on the activity and James’s mood
Distinguishing Features: a single tattoo on his left arm of the Starfleet security division symbol and the words ‘Always Prepared’ underneath and crossed phaser rifles behind it. He got this after graduating Boot camp.
Pets: None
Friends: Markus Millhouse, a fellow security enlisted personal who James served with during his second five year mission. They grew close because both were going through a divorce at the same time bonding and helping each other cope. They both also went through a hostage situation together. James and Markus remain in contact despite Markus leaving on another extended mission.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: being held hostage during his second five year mission and being put through nonstop simulations of his worst fears
Best Time: James thinks often of the time he spent sightseeing on Earth and how nice it was to take even a couple months long break from the fleet.
Most Crucial Experience: being rejected by the Academy pushed him forward to prove he was worthy.
Role Model: James’s first CO had been like how he is now, a Mustang Officer who started as an enlisted crewman, became an officer and earned his own command.
