Ekos, also known as M43 Alpha IV, is the fourth planet in the M43 Alpha star system.
Ekos is one of two class M planets orbiting M43 Alpha.
A Federation historian visited Ekos in the mid-23rd century. When the man found a planet in the throes of anarchy, he chose to violate the Prime Directive in order to help the native population.
The historian tried to institute a modified version of a Nazi government on Ekos - believing that a benign Nazi government could bring order to the Ekosian people without the disastrous consequences the original had.
Unfortunately, the historian didn't realize that the structure of the Nazi Germany government inherently invited abuse. Drugged by a subordinate, the natives took over.
Once this happened, the true nature of the Nazi party came to be, with the people of Zeon becoming the targets of their dictatorship rule.
Sent to find out what happened to the historian, Captain James T. Kirk and the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701 arrived to find the rule of a new Nazi government.
They tried their best to help the resistance movement, but the fall of the Ekosian Nazi government led to both Ekos and Zeon becoming more xenophobic and aggressive.
Between 2268 and 2287, the Klingon Empire initiated contact with the M43 Alpha system, and began providing arms to both sides, leading to an arms race, evolving into full-scale conflict in 2287.
The conflict continued, even after the Klingons withdrew following the explosion of Praxis in 2293.
The Federation attempted to broker a peace between Ekos and Zeon, but the conflict continued.
Commodore Göller recommended withdrawing all Federation personnel from the system.
