• January 1 – The Millennium Gate begins construction, the self-contained biosphere later becoming the model for Earth's first Mars colony.

• September 11 – Two airplanes crash into New York City's World Trade Center/Twin Towers, on Earth, in a terrorist attack.

• The NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft lands in the "saddle" region of 433 Eros, becoming the first spacecraft to land on an asteroid.

• Earth's first self-contained artificial heart is implanted.
