    After WWII, the United States and the Soviet Union competed for dominate power, influence, and prestige, a time that became known as the "Cold War" on Earth.



  • Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, is assassinated.
    Khan Noonien Singh is suspected to be responsible, but it is never proven.
  • NASA's Galileo probe becomes the first spacecraft to visit an asteroid (951 Gaspra).
  • Germany formally regains complete independence after four post-World War II occupying powers relinquish all remaining rights to the country.
  • A large solar flare triggers an anomalously large aurora as far south as Pennsylvania.
  • This particular year was the worst recorded year for large solar flares.
  • British astronomers announce they have found what appears to be an extrasolar planet.
  • The planet, believed to be at least 10 times the mass of Earth, was orbiting a young pulsar 30,000 light years away.
