• March 10 – The rings of planet Uranus are discovered by Kuiper Airborne Observatory's measurements of star occultation.

• November 1 – Discovery of '2060 Chiron,' the first of a new class of objects classified as "centaurs."

• An outer Sol System asteroid, a "centaur" generally have unstable orbits because they cross or have crossed the
  orbits of one or more of the giant planets. Centaurs typically exhibit the characteristics of both asteroids and comets.

• The NASA space shuttle Enterprise, (OV-101) completes its maiden flight.

• NASA launches space probes Voyager 2 and Voyager 1, in that order.
