Events
- The first recognition of cosmic microwave background radiation as a detectable phenomenon occurs.
This confirmation secured the "Big Bang" theory as the best thought as to the origin and evolution of the universe.
- Spacecraft "Ranger 7" sends back to Earth the first close-up photographs of the Moon.
These images are 1,000 times clearer than anything ever seen from Earth-bound telescopes.
- Probe "Mariner 4" is launched with the intention of exploring Mars (by means of a flyby).
Designed to conduct closeup scientific observations and transmit these photographs and observations back to Earth,
this probe produced the first close-up pictures of another planet's surface.
- The first heart transplant was done on a Human, using a chimpanzee heart.
The organ is rejected just a few hours later.
