  • The British prototype "Mark I Colossus" computer is constructed to assist in cryptanalysis of German signals.
    It is the world's first totally electronic programmable computing device.


  • The "Parícutin volcano" begins to appear in a cornfield in Mexico.
    A cinder cone volcano, it surged suddenly from the cornfield of a local farmer, attracting both popular and scientific attention.
    During the volcano's nine years of activity, it was sketched, mapped, sampled, and photographed thousands of times.
    By 1952, the eruption had left a 424-meter-high cone, and significantly damaged more than 233 square kilometers with the ejection of stone, volcanic ash and lava.
    In 1997, it was named as one of the "Seven Natural Wonders of the World."


  • Savar, a Vulcan, arrives on Earth as part of an observational mission. The journey from Vulcan took ten years complete.
    One of Vulcan's most respected space explorers, he literally wrote the book on/against interfering with any alien society before they were ready for first contact.
