- January 13 - A test pilot becomes the first person to escape from a stricken aircraft with an ejection seat.
- October 3 - The first successful launch of a V-2 /A4-rocket occurs.
- It flies 147 km (91 mi) and reaches an altitude of 84.5 km (52.5 mi), becoming the first man-made object to reach space.
- Plutonium is isolated for the first time, at the Metallurgical Laboratory of the University of Chicago.
- The "Manhattan Project": The first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction is initiated.
- This "Project" was a research and development undertaking that produced the first nuclear weapons.
