Valakis

The planet Valakis, also called Menk, is a Class M planet in the Alpha Quadrant, sixth in its star system.

It is home to two sentient humanoid species, the Valakians and the once-less-technologically-advanced Menk.

During the 22nd century, a genetic mutation caused the Valakians to die out by the millions, resulting in at least 12 million people. Dr. Phlox on the United Earth Ship Enterprise was able to help slightly, coming up with a medicine that would ease the symptoms of the disease. However, he also discovered that this disease appeared to be a natural way of evolution on the planet, giving way to the ever-evolving Menk species.

Most buildings on this planet were designed and constructed by the Valakians, whereas the small villages that housed the Menk remained rudimentary.

This planet was admitted to the Federation in 2236, shortly after they achieved warp drive.

Due to the Menk outnumbering the Valakis, the planet is more often called "Menk," but still holds the official name "Commonwealth of Menk and Valakis".
