Personal History

Born in Tennessee to parents that never married, the family was a peculiar one, with the kids sharing places of both parents at different times, through the devotion of the two to their family in different places. Derek’s Mother lives on a ranch near Manchester Tennessee, and his father in a suburb of Atlanta Georgia.

As a child Derek would frequent both of his parent’s homes, working on the ranch with the animals in the summers, schooling initially in Georgia, but then switching, in high school around his mother’s ranch and summering in Georgia. It was on the ranch where his maternal grandmother taught him about animals, life and how to care for life other than his own, and in the Georgia suburbs he learned southern courtesies and how to be properly social. It was his craftiness that led to him being sneaky and attentive. he liked to ovserve and notice things, pick up on other things that people might miss, or shock others with something plesantly unexpected.

He was usually a popular guy, more so than he wanted much of the time, preferring a smaller more dedicated group of friends than the cliquey popularity games that most kids grow up with. He got into sports while in his teens, mainly baseball and wrestling, taking on competition fighting for fun on the side, which earned him a wild boy reputation in his later teens. One of the times he was less successful was when he took a challenge in a lesser known area. The small group assembled and it turned out to be more of an ambush. The friends of the challenger joined in and teamed up on him, not enough of Derek's own supporters to help him out of the situation until they could bring help themselves. One of those friends had medical training, so he was able to help Derek from the attack injuries , save for a few scars which Derek has the man not repair, as a reminder of the situation. Derek took all this in and learned the tactics of a backup team and scouting locations as best as possible, though it would be a while for him to get back into the fun.

He was always tinkering with technology to make things fun and lively, but loved working with his hands, making, growing and building things, or else just experiencing life hands on. He usually appreciated nature and its beauty, in relaxation or exciting activities. one thing he liked to play with was antigravity things. Being a tinkerer he mainly kept to small projects, not liking or having the skill to take on bigger projects.

He eventually, once having established himself with a secure place of his own on lake Lanier in northern Georgia, he decided to try something new and enlist in Starfleet, as the excitement of travel and adventure was calling him while he relaxed in a more lakeside rural setting. This was the house that he maintained for his grandparents, a nice size lakeside house, traditional in style, which he cleaned up and added some niceties to. The grandparents eventually gave the house to him as they realized they were'nt going to be using the house for their own anymore. While working on the house underneath in the crawlspace, he was bitten by a few spiders, having disturbed their area. One bite infected and went into jelly, removing a decent ammount of one of his leg muscles, which he needed reconstruction and therapy to recover from, yet the sight of his own flesh going to jelly always will remain a nasty memory for him.

His adventures in the academy were as varied as they were in high school. Antigravity athletics and technology both intrigued him, as well as flight and tactics. He also liked to walk through the science department and observe the experiments thet did, learning a few of the tools along the way, borrowing them to try them out. Soon Derek carried a small pouch on his belt which had some of the tools and equipment he liked to have on hand for when he felt inquisitive or creative.

Derek took a good position up in the antigravity volleyball team ranking, as he loved the free floating flight and athletic bouncing around it took to excel in the odd sport. He took up activities again in unauthorized fighting as well, which he did well in, as his other sports and learning helped him hone technique. He’s had two informal reprimands, one for fighting of which charges were dismissed due to him defending himself, and also for a socially lewd act of which a group of students received light community punishment for.

USS Sheridan, DD-4086

Derek's first assignment was the USS Sheridan DD-4086. A light quick corvette style vessel with an odd shape and strange proportioning for what the mission of that kind of ship typically is. This first assignment started off with a long trek out to find a gem of Starfleet history, the NX-Challenger. Their trek through battle torn region of where the Bajor homeworld was, led them to a nebula where the ship hid, Derek being one of the pilots to lead a shuttle in to board the find.

Once aboard many were sick but not he, his wisdom was to not take off his EV Suit unlike most of the others, and he spared himself from catching a contagion that was aboard the ship. In the events to follow was injured and made immobile by his EV suit itself. In his defense while stuck where he was, he was able to acquire a trinket from the ship, which he holds personal to him, and his first mission.

The trip home was wrought with emergency as after working through his injuries, they had to free one of the regional homeworlds from a Krynar invasion force that had also approached Earth. Derek worked well to coordinate the flight during the battle, learning more how well the ship handled hands on outside of the many hours of holodeck simulation he used when preparing for situations like that.
