1882 - Physicist Hans Geiger is born, known for the Geiger counter, the instrument used for detecting and measuring ionizing radiation.
1929 - Opel-Sander Rak 1 (a rocket powered glider) made a successful 2-mile flight near Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany.
1954 - Earth's first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus is commissioned. It could dive longer, faster, and deeper than any submarine before it.
1994 - Space shuttle Endeavour was launched, carrying Space Radar Laboratory.
