1858 – "Donati's comet" became the first to be photographed. A bright comet with a spectacular curved dust tail, the picture was captured using a portrait camera at a low focal ratio.
1860 – Physicist and chemist Paul Urich Villard is born. Known for identifying the natural radiation we call "gamma rays," he also invented several instruments used to measure the radiation.
1969 – The Murchison meteorite fell in Australia.
1924 – The first Human aerial circumnavigation of Earth is completed by a team from the US Army.
1959 – The Explorer VI satellite revealed an intense radiation belt around Earth, taking the first remote imaging TV pictures of Earth's meteorological conditions.
2008 – SpaceX launches the first ever private spacecraft, the Falcon 1 into orbit.
