1858 – "Donati's comet" became the first to be photographed. A bright comet with a spectacular curved dust tail, the picture was captured using a portrait camera at a low focal ratio.
1860Physicist and chemist Paul Urich Villard is born. Known for identifying the natural radiation we call "gamma rays," he also invented several instruments used to measure the radiation.
1969 – The Murchison meteorite fell in Australia.

  • While only 100 kg of the meteorite was recovered, it was suspected to be of cometary origin due to its high water content (12%) and was studied intensely due to its abundance of amino acids (92+, only 19 of which are found on Earth).

1924 – The first Human aerial circumnavigation of Earth is completed by a team from the US Army.
1959 – The Explorer VI satellite revealed an intense radiation belt around Earth, taking the first remote imaging TV pictures of Earth's meteorological conditions.
2008 – SpaceX launches the first ever private spacecraft, the Falcon 1 into orbit.
