1189 – Richard I of England (aka "Richard the Lionheart") is crowned at Westminster.
1976 – NASA's Viking 2 spacecraft lands at Utopia Planitia on Mars, later taking the first pictures of the red planet's surface. (The Fleet Yards are named for this landmark.)
