Personal History

Born Irisi Kel, she was the only child of prostitute Lira Kel. Irisi's childhood was full of small, rundown apartments, too little food, and even less structure. If it wasn't for the dedication of an overworked social services officer, it is unlikely she would have even found her way to school. While growing up, Irisi idolized her mother's beauty, grace and kindness, but as aged she began to realize that her mother was deeply flawed. Lira was an egomaniac with a crushed spirit; a woman who found no joy in life, and seemed sure Irisi would suffer the same as her. She met Irisi's success in academics with derision, and often commented that it was a waste of her child's time. As Lira got older, she fell deeper and deeper into drug abuse, often forcing Irisi to act as the caretaker. Lira's age and declining mental state drove away her few remaining clients, and she became more and more desperate. Meanwhile, Irisi grew older and more beautiful by the day, and Lira began to quite brazenly hint at what she saw as the next step for her child. When she met Irisi's refusal to prostitute herself with violence, striking out and opening a large gash on her own daughter's cheek, Irisi finally gave up on her mother and left in the middle of the night with a few meager belongings--and her mom's savings.

She stayed with a friend for a few months to finish her schooling, and then used the money she had from her mom, along with her earnings from a part-time job, to catch ride on a cargo ship headed to Earth. Booked under the name Irisi Sen--lifting the name of her favorite poet--and with only the thought of getting away from Farius Prime, she headed towards the home planet of the Federation, known for their prosperity. While on the cargo ship, she befriended the ship's engineer, a kind Bolian named Malik. Malik taught her the basic concepts of starship engineering and maintenance, and Irisi found great comfort in the technical work. She was also a strong pupil and Malik urged her to consider joining Star Fleet, assuring her that it was the best opportunity for a young, talented woman without a home. She told him she'd consider it.

She did consider Starfleet, but wasn't sure how she felt. Her goal for so long had been to get away from Farius Prime, and now that she was gone, she felt herself getting restless and nervous. What was she going to do? Where would she go? Did she really care? But as she moved about on the foreign planet, she found the idea more and more attractive. While on the cargo ship she had been able to escape into her work. There was no judgment in an EPS conduit. Nothing to fear from a hydrospanner. And on a starship, everybody else was away from home as well. The small, dingy corridors had felt considerably less claustrophobic than the swarm of people inhabiting this new, alien planet. She made her way to San Francisco and put in her application to Star Fleet.

And waited. As a non-Federation citizen, she had to receive a special waiver to be eligible. And every month seemed to bring about another interview with another officer who asked the same questions, and didn't like the same answers. Finally, Irisi started to look into other ways to get the training she might need to become an engineer, and then, without warning, she received a message that she had been provisionally accepted to the academy.

Irisi was wholly unprepared for the academy. Although an excellent student on Farius Prime, their curriculum left her lacking in major areas. Furthermore, on Farius Prime she'd had only a few, close friends since childhood. In the academy, she was surrounded by people who were completely foreign to her in demeanor, culture and background. She had trouble connecting with them, and they seemed happy to dismiss her. However, Irisi refused to let these obstacles stand in her way of succeeding. Her resilient, stubborn nature showed itself, and she spent hours locked away studying in order to catch up. Rocky at first, her grades quickly pulled up, and several instructors commented on her dramatic turnaround.

At the start of her first year, Irisi met Andi Hooke, a human from the Lunar Colony with a quirky personality and infectious laugh. They were lab partners in a required basic astrogation course, and quickly became best friends. Andi was everything Irisi needed in a friend: she pushed her to socialize, but also respected when she was uncomfortable; she didn't press Irisi about her background, but was happy to listen when she did want to share; and she possessed a keen sense of observation into the human condition that Irisi found lacking in many of her classmates.

With a close friend, and school under control, Irisi felt herself slipping into a comfortable routine for the first time in her life. By the end of her senior year, she was well on her way to graduating in the top 10% of her class, and despite occasionally being declared insubordinate by her instructors, she was confident she had made the right choice by joining Star Fleet.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Computer engineering. Emphasis: design and implementation of neural nets.
Academy Minor(s): Power systems engineering and xenoliterature.
Hobbies and Pastimes: Irisi enjoys exploring the arts. She enjoys literature and music, but her favorite activity is to sit in one of San Francisco's many cafes, drinking coffee and sketching the many different and interesting people she sees walking by. Makeup. She has also turned her studies at the academy into a hobby itself. Her dream project is to set up an integrated neural net into a starship, helping the computer to "think." Not as an artificial intelligence, but in order to help the computer to respond to stimuli like battle damage and choose the best way to respond depending on the resources and status of the ship, without relying on being pre-programmed with thousands of different scenarios.
Short-Term Goals: With the end of her days at the academy nearing, Irisi is nervous about moving on to the next phase of her life. Without her best friend, and the structure she's built for herself in San Francisco, she's unsure how she'll adjust to her new life as an officer. Her goal is to succeed smoothly, perform her job well, and hopefully not ruffle any feathers.
Long-Term Goals: She's unsure. Sometimes she has a strong desire to continue schooling and work on research, but other times she feels so restless on the planet that she can't wait to be out in the stars again. At this point, if being honest, she would answer, "to survive."
Personality: Irisi tends to be quiet, especially around people she's unfamiliar with. However, she's also very warm. Many of her classmates would describe her as, "the girl who's smiling all the time," unsure of her race or her name. Those few who get to know her well know that when comfortable, she can actually become quite verbose. She'll often speak with excitement and energy, using her hands to help explain what she's talking about. Those few who are extremely close to her know that sometimes that smile fades into a different kind of quiet: a deep, silent melancholy.
Sense of Humor: Irisi often finds herself amused by wordplay, a funny story, or her own self-deprecating comments. She is put off by cruelty or humor at the expense of others, although she has been known to dip into sarcasm when on edge.
Phobias: None
Likes: A challenging technical problem. Warm beverages. Dancing. Klingon poetry.
Dislikes: Being patronized. Replicator food
Pet Peeves or Gripes: The never-ending bureaucracy of the Federation and Star Fleet.  An emphasis on theory over practicality. Overly nosy questions
Bad Habits or Vices: Alcohol. Insomnia
Achievements: Second author on article in peer review journal. Being told by Andi that she got her the "best birthday present ever" after presenting her with a journal of sketches of some of Andi's favorite people and places in San Francisco. Getting away from Farius Prime
Disappointments: Her difficulty making friends. That she still can't quite seem to "just be happy." Her less than stellar review from Professor Haas
Illnesses: None
Strengths: Intelligence, a keen sense of observation, and a stubborn nature. The ability to empathize with others
Weaknesses: Poor communication skills, a lack of patience with dumb rules or conclusions (even if they're from a senior), and a stubborn nature. Sometimes too self-reliant for her own good.
Fears: That she won't succeed as a Starfleet officer. That she will never find somebody to love her. That she will be forced to return Farius Prime. Also, heights
Prejudices: Coming from a non-Federation planet that was lacking significantly in resources and wealth, Irisi has had to work hard for everything in her life. She sees the much easier life that many of her peers have had, and she finds herself very frustrated
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Irisi's style ignores fashion trends and tends towards interesting lines or silhouettes, vibrant colors, or catching patterns.
Distinguishing Features: Typical Farian nose ridge extending up the forehead to the hairline.
Pets: None
Friends: Andi Hooke

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: Realizing that her mother would force her into the same life she suffered in just to survive.
Best Time: Skinny dipping in Professor Veer's pool with Andi.
Most Crucial Experience: Deciding to leave Farius Prime
Role Model: Andi. Professor S'Dek. The many aliens and women before her who helped clear the path to succeeding in the universe in general, and Star Fleet in specific
