Personal History
The planet Kardeth takes 2.4 standard Terran years to orbit its primary. As a result, Kardethans are much longer-lived than standard Humans, often living to the equivalent of 300 years or more. Although only half-Kardethan, Jason grew up on Kardeth and seems to have favored his Kardethan half. As a typical teenager, he liked the music of his generation, and spent his summers attending a lot of music concerts. The exception was the summer of his 5th (Kardathan) year—the Summer of Hell as he laughingly (now) refers to it. He spent the entire summer in the hospital because he wound up contracting a succession of illnesses. Neither the doctors nor CID ever figured out how he came in contact with them. None of them were particularly fatal, but altogether they made him quite miserable. He did manage to make it to the big concert of the following summer, “Rock of Ages”. He even managed to meet the concert’s promoter after the concert.
After graduating from primary school, he spent a year working at a free clinic until there was an opening at the Denobulan Science Academy the following year. He spent six years at the academy studying anatomy, biology and a minor in cellular biology without ever quite getting his doctor’s degree, but gained the basis to pursue his goal of finding out what triggered his ‘summer of hell’. He then transferred to the Academy of Science on Deneb V to study bacteriology with a minor in hematology. Four years later, he pursued his same interests in medicine by attending the University of Rigel to study microbiology and a minor in neuropathology. Not finding the answers he was looking for, he got sidetracked by attending the Orion Institute of Cosmology to study bioengineering and a minor in biometrics in a 3 year accelerated program. While it was interesting, it didn’t get him any closer to solving the problem, so he next went to the Trill Science Ministry to study immunology and a minor in epidemiology.
By this time, he was beginning to think he was turning into a professional student, but he was still determined to find an answer. He took an 18-month sabbatical to find himself and re-think his goals. He traveled around the quadrant, learning about other cultures and helping out at clinics. In the process, he learned that he still didn’t know as much as he thought he should, nor as much as he needed to solve his old problem. He applied and was accepted to the Medical College of Axanar where he studied toxicology. That, in turn, led him to the Bajoran Science Institute to study pathology. His dedication to learning also got him into the Vulcan Science Academy where he studied artificial intelligence with a minor in cybernetics. In a way, it was another sidetrack, but it opened up a new avenue for him. He pursued that at the Daystrom Institute to study bioforming.
It was at the end of his studies at the Daystrom Institute that his instructor asked Jason if he was ever going to do anything with his life. “Like what?” Jason responded. “I don’t know. How about joining Star Fleet?” So he did.
