Personal History
Sovon was born in Chicago, Illinois, on Earth. His mother was an instructor at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and his father was a self-employed architect. He is the second of three children, his older brother, Toran, is a security officer aboard the USS Agamemnon and his younger sister, Jil, is a musician. Both of his siblings are single. Toran was married, but his wife was killed in combat aboard the Agamemnon.
Growing up, Sovon was jealous of his more athletic and popular older brother. To compensate, he started reading anything he could find and poured himself into his studies. His aptitude for medicine and psychology surfaced when he was 12 and on a class trip to Vulcan. The instructor collapsed while piloting the shuttle and Sovon administered first aid and kept his classmates calm until help arrived.
He was accepted to Starfleet at the age of 17 and Starfleet Medical at age 21, where he quickly progressed through his required classes and graduate with a dual doctorate at the age of 27. He majored in Emergency Medicine, with a specialty in trauma, and Psychology, which allows him the option of serving as both staff physician and staff counselor, if needed. His mother gave him a palukoo as a congratulatory gift.
After medical school, Sovon applied to the Initiate Program at the Trill Symbiosis Commission. He was accepted and complete all of the preparatory work required to become a host. However, prior to being joined, his sister-in-law Chlesea Young, was killed in action aboard the Agamemnon during a skirmish with the Romulans. Against the advisement of his field docent and members of the Commission, Penn left the Initiate program to tend to family matters.
Having aided Toran and the other members of his family with their grief, Sovon has returned to active duty and has accepted assignment aboard Space Station Sierra-18.
