1959 – The world sees the far side of the Moon for the first time.
1977 – The last natural case of smallpox is discovered. The WHO and the CDC consider this date the anniversary of the eradication of smallpox, the most spectacular success of vaccination.
1984 – A child named Fae becomes the first newborn recipient of a cross-species heart transplant. The child received a walnut-sized young baboon heart, and lived for 20 days before complications caused her to die.
