Personal History

Elizabeth No’rah Nielson was born to Captain Julia Nielson and Lieutenant Commander Vladimir Komoscov. Being that she was a hybrid baby, No’rah’s mother required extensive medical assistance in order to bring the birth to full term. In the last few months of pregnancy, her mother was put on an early medical leave where she returned to Earth to give birth to No’rah.

A Fleet Brat to the core, No’rah mostly spent her time in Berlin, Germany, Earth, where her mother worked at the Star Fleet Corps of Engineers. She got to live a little while in space depending on what her mother was working on at any particular moment. That lead her to getting into her fair share of goodhearted mischief. No’rah grew up with a passion for space travel thanks to her Mom, always wanting to visit the bridge and engine room of a ship to see what made it do the things it did. The idea that she could travel to different planets was always a bit mindbending for her, in the same way that fairytales are.

During the more uncertain times, No’rah had her maternal grandfather serve as her primary caregiver. She also had two biological uncles, and plenty of honourary uncles and aunts who helped watch out for her and provide her parental guidance. In this way, No’rah never felt like she was lacking because of her father’s absence in her life. Part of her still wonders what happened to him, but she’s mostly made peace with it.

The most difficult part of No’rah’s life was when her mother went missing for almost a year. The elder Nielson, along with No’rah’s Uncle Alex, had gone looking for an old mentor when they were captured by Cardassians. No’rah went through the stages of grief and loss, and a severe bought of depression. It was especially difficult, as it dug up old wounds regarding her father. No’rah herself went missing for several days as she worked through her emotions. Her grandfather and family surrounded her with as much support as they could. This is when No’rah picked up Mok’bara, a Klingon martial arts. Her grandfather had suggested it as a way to connect with her Klingon heritage. It also served as a way for her to reign in some of her adolescent (and Klingon) anger, and it helped her work through some of the depression.

It’s no surprise with so much engineering in her blood that No’rah would have a big interest in the field. She wanted to design ships like her mom did. No’rah’s time at the Academy was mostly a lot of fun and a lot of learning. It challenged her in a way that regular school never could. It was also the first time she was allowed to stand on her own two feet. She’s ready to pave her own way in Star Fleet, and wants to define a career very differently than her mother’s.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Engineering
Academy Minor(s): Structural Dynamics, Deflector Technologies
Hobbies and Pastimes: Mok’barra, a Klingon martial art similar to Terran Tai Chi. Whitewater rafting. Free climbing. Reading. Repairing old automobiles.
Short-Term Goals: Get settled into life on a starship
Long-Term Goals: To see one of her starship designs put into production.
Personality: Cheerful and charming. Is clearly comfortable in her own skin and doesn’t care what others think of her (but not in a holier-than-thou way, more in a… “she’s having too much fun to care” sort of way).
Sense of Humor: Dad Jokes
Phobias: Intense dislike of slugs.
Likes: The quiet that comes with her being alone in nature. Dragonbreath Ale. Discovering a new climbing route. The view of the stars at warp. Racing simulations.
Dislikes: Most junk food. Polar climates. Roommates that snore. People who behave differently around her when they learn who her mother is.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: When people assume they know her because they knew her mom.
Bad Habits or Vices: Sometimes forgets how scary she can be when her full Klingon shows
Achievements: Graduated Star Fleet Academy.
Disappointments: Never knowing her father.
Illnesses: Her left arm has been broken a half dozen times, and always because No’rah was doing something stupid (usually because of one of her hobbies, like whitewater rafting).
Strengths: Analytical with a good eye for detail. Courageous and adventurous. Not afraid to speak her mind.
Weaknesses: When she’s tired, the angry Klingon comes out. Can’t be bothered with politics; wants to focus on growing as an engineer, rather than proving to anyone that she’s the ‘best’ (whatever that is).
Fears: Loved ones being taken from her.
Prejudices: Dislikes Cardassians, as they were suspected as being the ones who kidnapped No’rah’s mother.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Casual and relaxed. Bright colours.
Distinguishing Features: Partial Klingon ridges on forehead, an attribute of her mixed heritage. Tattoo of a raven’s feather on her inside right wrist.
Pets: A cat named Rocket
Friends: Midshipman Hara Jrote, her Academy roommate, who put up with No’rah’s enthusiasm and eccentricities with good humour and amusement.

Personal Paradigm Shifts

Most Painful Experience: The abduction of her mother. As she graduates from the Academy, this has been giving No’rah a little bit of trepidation knowing that there’s inherent danger in being a Star Fleet officer. She’s somewhat worried about putting her mother in the same position that the elder Nielson put No’rah in several years ago.
Best Time: A camping trip with her mom, grandfather, and two uncles in the pacific northwest of north America. Two weeks sleeping under the stars, kayaking, and spending time with her family.
Most Crucial Experience: Growing up as a Fleet Brat. It’s in her blood.
Role Model: Her mom. No’rah grew up with a passion for space travel thanks to her Mom, always wanting to visit the bridge and engine room of a ship to see what made it do the things it did. It’s no surprise with so much engineering in her blood that No’rah would have a big interest in the field. She wanted to design ships like her mom did.
