Etin inherited talent from his mother, and was always the highest rank male in his science classes, and almost always ranked in the top 10% of his class. The women were both amused and annoyed by this male who they saw as infringing on their territory, especially as he took more advanced classes. The other males in his class couldn't understand his continual pursuit of the study, and his lack of interest in other areas deemed more appropriate their gender. This often resulted in many fights, in which Etin could hold his own, although he would never be a brilliant fighter. For his part, he found himself irritated by those who blindly followed the paths deemed most appropriate by the state, even when it was obvious that their true skills lie elsewhere.

Etin decided that his answer lay outside of Cardassia itself: surely he could find other projects out there that needed pure grunt labor, someone to go through dozens of padds just to find a few bits of usable data. He could easily provide that kind of help, because it wouldn't need resources that he didn't have, just his own will and dedication to the project. That would provide him experience, and even better, the opportunity for publication, it would lend him credibility and way to sell himself better. He could also cultivate connections that might help him along, especially if he went off-world to further his career.

|Introduction=

His mother proved to be priceless in this quest. In addition to her work for the government, she was involved in personal research project that had just finished the data collection phase and was in need of several assistants to start mining through it. The group was spread out through the Alpha Quadrant, aside from her, there was also a Trill, a Betazoid and a Terran. They agreed to let him assist on a trial basis, and he spent the next year doing whatever asked. While the majority of the work was mindlessly dull, his mother engaged him in debates and discussions about the project. Seven months after the initial paper was written, nineteen months after he joined the project, and three years after his mother and the group initiated their research, he became a published researcher, something that none of his classmates could claim, even if his name was seventh (and last) name on the list.

|History=Etin was always a bit of an outsider amongst his own kind. While most Cardassians believed that men had no head for science and rarely encouraged males to study it outside the requisites that future careers for military or other branch of civil service might require, Etin quickly fell in love them thanks to his mother who would often bring work home and explain to him what she was doing as she worked to figure out problems in her latest research. Corbin wasn't truly happy with the encouragement, but figured that Etin would either grow tired of it when it became too difficult, or once he entered schooling due to peer pressure.

It didn't take him long to be thankful that hed put in the effort. As he started his last round of state-schooling, Etin watched as several of his female classmates were offered positions within the Science Ministry even those who consistently ranked beneath him, while being told that his skills were not remarkable enough to offer him anything, despite that his final-year project earned commendation when they had been judged on a name-blind basis.

Neither event occurred.

He'd been ranting to Jaret (the lone male on the research team aside from himself) for the fifth time that it was unfair that he was skilled enough to enter Star Fleet Academy but couldn't get a position at the Science Ministry. He'd been cut off mid-rant "So why not join Star Fleet?"

He laughed at that answer, not thinking the Betazoid was serious. Jaret wasn't going to let him off the hook that easily. He pointed out the numerous benefits that Star Fleet had to offer: state of the art equipment, almost limitless funding, a much greater latitude in research areas and greater support of personal research compared to the Science Ministry. He also promised to be a reference for him if he decided to go for it.

Even as a young teenager, he started to notice that he was being hindered in his studies: the women in his class were able to spend summers assisting low-level projects, gaining valuable skills and connections needed to further careers. He knew that he would need to find another way to make himself more attractive.

Etin tried to dismiss the suggestion, to forget about it. But the suggestion never quite went away. As he came to accept that he wasn't going to be offered a spot at home, the thought of joining Star Fleet became more and more appealing. If he stayed at home, he'd have to start a career in something he wasn't passionate about. If he left home for a civilian agency, there'd never be that certainty of funding of work.

Hesitantly, he approached his mother first. She was surprised, but not nearly as much as he thought she would be. She understand what about Star Fleet appealed to him, and knew that her connections at home wouldn't be enough to overcome the deeply ingrained biases of their society. She rallied the troops and got the other members (Jaret needed no persuading) to write him letters of recommendation.

His father was much more reluctant. He'd rather his son stay within Cardassian borders, even if in civilian employment, but did agree to make discreet inquiries on his son's behalf: years of working at the Military Academy had left him with a handful of contacts that could safely say were less then hostile, even if they weren't what you could consider friends.

It took three recommendation letters, four interviews, a discrete inquiry into his familys background and the support of a Captain, a Commodore and an Admiral to be granted his admission.

|          Hobbies=Maket's main hobby is history, enjoying both scientific history as well as intellectual, political-leaning history. Science history fascinates him as he enjoys seeing how people thought their world once worked. Political he's intrigued by alternative systems of government and enjoys reading political treatises by other races. He doesn't tend to see any of them as superior to what he is familiar with, but is willing to give credit where it is due when he does spot good ideas. He also enjoys the outdoors and can often be found on the holodeck exploring unfamiliar jungles, occasionally looking for rare plants as his mother once taught him

|      Personality=Generally, Etin has a level head, and inclined to keeping his temper, except for when he feels he has been wronged. He is slow to make friends, and only tends to open up to those who share his interests, or who can hold their own with him at the bar. He is civil to everyone, until they give him reason to not be. He has always been a fairly private person, and won't open up too easily.

On the down side, he is arrogant and stubborn. While he is just as capable in science as Cardassian women, the commentary about his skills reflected a deficiency of creative problem solving; he'd gained a reputation for being stubborn about a methodology, especially if flaws were pointed out, or there was a better way of going about the answer. Although he'd been made aware of it by his instructors, he'd refused to believe it, thinking it all gender-bias and jealousy instead.

38
Familial Relationships
Father:
Corbin Maket
Mother:
Nimora Maket
Status of Parents:
Married, but distant. His father, a Gul, helps run the Military Academy overseeing training of new recruits, and generally lived at the academy or was away on related business, while Etin lived with his mother in the capital where she worked for the Science Ministry. Just as dedicated to work as her husband, it resulted in the pair not seeing each other for long stretches save for twice-weekly communications over the communication system. Although Corbin always hoped to have his son follow him into the Military, he largely allowed Nimora to guide the raising of their son.
Siblings:
None
Marital Status:
Single. His desire to obtain a position in the Science Ministry resulted in him placing a social life on the back burner; he left Cardassia Prime not long after completing his state-mandated education.

Personal History

Etin was always a bit of an outsider amongst his own kind.

Neither event occurred.

Even as a young teenager, he started to notice that he was being hindered in his studies: the women in his class were able to spend summers assisting low-level projects, gaining valuable skills and connections needed to further careers. He knew that he would need to find another way to make himself more attractive.

It took three recommendation letters, four interviews, a discrete inquiry into his family's background and the support of a Captain, a Commodore and an Admiral to be granted his admission.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Science, with a concentration in quantum chemistry
Academy Minor(s): Astrophysics
Hobbies and Pastimes: Maket's main hobby is history, enjoying both scientific history as well as intellectual, political-leaning history. He also enjoys the outdoors and can often be found on the holodeck exploring unfamiliar jungles, occasionally looking for rare plants as his mother once taught him
Short-Term Goals: Move up in rank to gain greater control over his research
Long-Term Goals: Produce research that will make the Science Ministry regret passing him over. He wants his name to grow enough that he can assist others like himself find a place in the sciences
Personality: Generally, Etin has a level head, and inclined to keeping his temper, except for when he feels he has been wronged.

Sense of Humor: Existent, but only to those who he'll let in. Most will see him as humorless, the kind of person who would make other ship-mates go "He told a joke?"
Phobias: Cheimaphobia, the fear of cold. He's more sensitive than most Cardassians to colder weather and fears of ever getting trapped in very cold climes with no way to bring up the weather.
Likes: eating/drinking, reading, traditional music, steam baths (it was never warm/humid enough for him at the Academy outside his quarters), trolling archives for old, out of date, science reports for centuries ago, he always fascinated and amused by the interpretation of world and how it works.
Dislikes: Bajorans & mixed Cardassian/Bajoran children, (something he inherited from his parents, thus far has not seen anything to give him cause to change this view), people who waste their talents, Star Fleet Uniforms (doesn't find them flattering to his build and still finds them occasionally irritating to his ridges) and Terran food (with the notable exception of shark fin soup, which he happened upon by chance one day during shore leave).
Bad Habits or Vices: Etin grinds his teeth when frustrated. As for vices, he has tendency to over-enjoy his kanar, but that is more due to his infrequent ability to get it.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Cardassian-designed civilian wear. If it wasn't made at home, he had it tailored. He's more concerned about comfort than style, but wants it to fit will.
Distinguishing Features: The ridges along his collarbone are more pronounced than most, but it wouldn't necessarily be noticeable unless a person had a great deal of familiarity with his kind.
Pets: None. With his parents coming and going, it was decided that it was for the best if the family did not keep one.
Friends: Tobin Natrim, the eldest child of a Gul that Etin's father had met when they were still both Glen's. Unlike Etin, Tobin knew that he would be joining the military from a young age, both out of desire, and out of duty: his father wouldn't have accepted anything less. Tobin was one of the first to mock Etin when he showed a preference for the sciences, but he was also the first to stop once he decided that if Etin wasn't going to join, there'd be more opportunities for him to advance. Their friendship was mutually beneficial; Etin helped Tobin with science, Tobin helped Etin with programming. They began to grow distant as they neared the end of schooling, Tobin dated more frequently than Etin did, and both had to prepare for their respective entrance exams, but it was still a solid friendship that Etin was certain would last through the vast-reaches of space.
