A listening post is a covert facility for spying on communications and territory (as of an enemy) between space-faring civilizations.
"Listening stations" were first employed during Earth's first World War. These eavesdropping stations were used to intercept radio waves, which were messages being transmitted wirelessly between governments.
The famed French Eiffel Tower was used as a listening station during this time, and intercepted and decoded encrypted messages from the German government, the main antagonist.
Fun Facts:
- In 2151, Captain Jonathan Archer uncovered a Vulcan listening post hidden beneath a monastery, confirming Andorian suspicions.
- As of 2367, the Federation-Romulan border was littered with Federation listening posts.
This was just one of several measures that made it hard for Romulan ships to enter Federation space without being detected, even with their cloaking devices.
- Before and during the Dominion War, listening posts on the Gamma Quadrant side of the Bajoran wormhole were employed by both the Federation and the Dominion.
