Personal History

Everyone has a destiny, a purpose in life. For some, it is a long life of discovery before they can find what it is they are meant for. For L’Haan, it was much simpler. Generations ago, one of her ancestors had come to a logical conclusion: since the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, then it stands to reason that some must serve so that the greater whole can be protected. The entire family from that point on has served, serving in the various defense forces of the planet, and then with the High Command, and finally with Star Fleet. Her parents served during the Dominion War aboard the USS T’Kumbra, and when she and her sister were born, there was no question that they would follow in their parents footsteps.

Unfortunately for L’Haan, she was more interested in machines than in service. Her parents had been security officers, as had theirs, and they expected the tradition to continue. While her older sister did make that leap, L’Haan could not. She tried, but never was adequate in her attempts, not for her instructors, not for her, and definitely not for her parents. While her mother tried to encourage her, saying that service comes in many forms, her relationship with her father has been strained for quite some time as a result.

She still joined Starfleet, but for engineering, though she took a security minor to attempt to satisfy her father (it failed to do so). In her chosen field, though, she excelled, and by the time she graduated she was assigned as an engineer on some of the first Federation warships. She served well, if without distinction, for many years until the Krynar War.

During her service, she had gained a reputation as a stickler for the rules, enforcing the tiniest bit of regulation as strictly as the greatest. When she was reassigned to the USS Ares at the start of the Krynar War, she was promoted to Assistant Chief Engineer, overseeing the night shift. Commander Ferelli, the human Chief Engineer, took her aside one day and encouraged her to, in her words, “loosen up”. She said that some leeway was needed, especially with how tense everyone was due to the war. “Let them get away with the little things,” she advised, “and they’ll give you all they’ve got for the big things.” L’Haan hadn’t really understood, but had agreed with her nonetheless.

She was aboard the USS Ares when it was destroyed in combat with the enemy. She received a commendation for saving much of the engineering crew, but refuses to wear the medal. All she remembers is watching as Commander Ferelli, running for the escape pods that L’Haan was manning, was killed by an exploding EPS panel. A panel that her crew had been working on the night before, and hadn’t been able to finish. Due to the chief’s “leeway” policy, she had let them simply close it up and keep it bypassed until someone else could get to it. Logically, she knows that her actions had little, if anything, to do with her superior’s death, and no one places any blame on her for it.

No one but her.

This was the last straw. Having lost many colleagues and suffered other traumas during her years of wartime service, she went on an extended leave and returned to Vulcan, intending to study the ways of Kohlinar as she believed that complete detachment was the only way forward. None of the instructors and mentors on the mountain believed she could do it; she was too young, too traumatised, and was there for the wrong reasons. Kohlinar was to be studied for logic’s sake alone, not as a means of therapy.

One, however, did take her under his wing and prepared to teach her, though Master Lokal had no expectation that she would succeed. And while the teaching did help her achieve some sense of detachment, she did fail to attain mastery of Kohlinar. Her call to service was too strong, and despite the trauma of losing so many comrades she still cared about those she served with and that served out there still. Her teacher welcomed this and encouraged her to return to Star Fleet, as that was where she belonged.

She returned, and was assigned to the Academy, serving as the Chief Engineer aboard one of the older ships assigned for cadet cruises. She worked diligently in teaching the students exactly how to serve on a ship, and returned to her strict ways, assigning punishments for even minor infractions though she did match the punishment to the crime. Some of her colleagues tried to talk her down but she refused to “lighten up”, as Lieutenant Shanth called it, countering that if she could teach the cadets how to do it properly, then they would be better officers once they graduated. None of the other instructors could argue with her logic, as she knew they couldn’t, and she continued.

Eventually, she was reassigned. The USS Artemis needed a replacement as chief engineer, and none of the staff aboard were deemed adequate to the task. L’Haan saw it as a challenge, and an extension of her assignment at the Academy. She would bring them into shape; after all, their lives could depend on.

Addendum

During the Attack on the Borg Megasphere, LCdr L'Haan was killed in action. Her service was exemplary, and likely saved many lives by keeping the shields and systems running as long as she could.
Due to the delta radiation she was exposed to, her body could not be returned to Vulcan, though a private ceremony was held by her family.

Personality Profile

Academy Major(s): Engineering, Structural and Mechanical
Academy Minor(s): Security
Hobbies and Pastimes: Crochet. Being used to living on Vulcan, living among humans and other species means she is perpetually cold, and crocheting her own blankets both is a meditation aid and gives her something warm to sleep under. Needless to say, she hides this from everyone.
Short-Term Goals: Get the Artemis’ engineering bay in shape.
Long-Term Goals: Potentially her own command, though she is content with her own domain at the moment. Reconciling with her father.
Personality: Doesn’t want to get close to anyone; gruff and standoffish.
Sense of Humor: Dry and dark, though as typical with Vulcans its difficult to find in the first place.
Phobias: Losing more ships and crews.
Likes: Order and discipline; also fuzzy blankets, though she’d never admit it to anyone.
Dislikes: Slipshod half-measures and temporary solutions; things should be done by the book in the first place, and anything that isn’t done that way is only making the work harder later.
Pet Peeves or Gripes: Personal questions; she doesn’t talk about herself anymore, and doesn’t want to know about your life, at least not if you’re in her chain of command.
Bad Habits or Vices: Is supposed to be seeing a counselor as part of her return to Starfleet; hasn’t done so in nearly two years.
Achievements: Gold Star for her actions on the Ares, along with various other medals for performance stretching back to the Borg War.
Disappointments: The loss of communication with her father; she had hoped he would be proud of her service, but instead he dotes on her sister who has served on the front lines during the myriad wars of the modern age.
Illnesses: Undiagnosed PTSD she mitigates through meditation and strict discipline.
Strengths: Meticulous attention to detail, and is a fine engineer if a bit unimaginative.
Weaknesses: Inflexible at times, and is cold for being a command officer.
Fears: Loss and the pain that brings, loss of control not just of her emotions but of everything.
Prejudices: Tellarites are as a whole messy, untidy, and lazy in her mind; the majority of the ones she’s served with have fit this mold anyway.
Off Duty Clothing Tastes: Her uniform, possibly discarding her jacket if she’s in her quarters.
Distinguishing Features: None; a Vulcan doesn’t believe in ornamentation of any kind.
Friends: None; formerly Sarella Palar, a fellow officer on the Ares.
