The Kazarites are a telepathic humanoid species located in the Beta Quadrant. They are members of the United Federation of Planets, and consider themselves to be the herdsmen of the galaxy.
Physiology
The Kazarites are humanoids who have thick fur lining their entire bodies except for their faces, hands and possibly their feet. This fur is particularly thick around the base of the neck and usually spills out over their clothing. It can be a variety of colors, though black, dark brown and white are the most common. The color of a Kazarite's skin usually matches the color of their fur. Facial hair is common among male members of the species. Circles of darker pigmentation surround their eyes, and Kazarites possess slightly pronounced foreheads and cheekbones. Areas of skin which are not lined with fur are smooth and glossy. Their fingers are slightly longer than most humanoid species, and their nails are usually kept long and sharpened.
They are a telepathic species, but Kazarites are unusual in that they cannot telepathically communicate with each other, or with other humanoids. Instead, they are able to communicate telepathically with all known forms of animal life, regardless of their species or planet of origin. This enables them to read the minds of animals, as well as broadcasting their thoughts to them in a manner animals can understand and respond to. Additionally, they are able to influence animals in ways which allow them to exist peacefully with them, and to herd them together. Kazarites are believed to also possess low-level telekinetic powers, as well as the ability to teleport themselves with the power of their minds, although this is not confirmed.
Culture
Though they are a technologically capable species, the Kazarites are far more interested in ecology and are usually found living in agricultural societies. Their ability to telepathically communicate with animals has had a profound influence on the development of their culture and so it is common for Kazarites to devote their lives to the protection, care and study of animals, often becoming shepherds and veterinarians. Their unique insight into the animal kingdom has resulted in Kazarites being one of the galaxy's leading intellectual forces in [[#REDIRECT zoology. Their interests stretch beyond animals and into nature and the environment as a whole, and they frequently offer their services to terraforming projects and other projects primarily concerning ecology.
Despite their somewhat bestial appearance, Kazarites are generally placid and peaceful. Equally, their community is intelligent and civilized. While they have a special relationship with animals, Kazarites do not consider themselves to be animalistic.
They are known to particularly enjoy conversations with animals, sometimes moreso than with other humanoids.
Kazarites are almost always seen wearing thick robes, often composed of layers of alternating colors. These robes are sometimes fur-trimmed or tasseled, and are generally homespun from robust, coarse wools and fabrics. Particularly when travelling, Kazarites often carry small leather pouches around their necks. These pouches contain tiny pellets which, when mixed with water, become a yeast-like food which they either eat themselves or use to provide nourishment for animals.
