1938 – A meteorite lands in Pennsylvania, United States, estimated to have weighed 450 metric tons when it hit the atmosphere and exploded.
1947 – Kenneth Arnold makes the first widely reported UFO sighting near Mount Rainier, Washington.
- The pilot claimed to see a string of nine, shiny unidentified flying objects flying past Mount Rainier at speeds he estimated to be at least 1,200 miles an hour (1,932 km/hr).
