• October 30 - Orson Wells broadcasts his radio play of H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds, causing anxiety in some of the audience in the United States.
  This radio broadcast, though advertised as a play, lead some people to believe that aliens had landed on Earth, and were violent.

• The nuclear fission of uranium is discovered.
  This becomes the scientific and technological basis of nuclear power, which marks the beginning of the "Atomic Age" on Earth.
