Personal History
Born the youngest child to parents of an overbearing nature in San Francisco, Zahra was always considered a little “slow” by her family. She learned to walk after the generally-accepted average age, and only uttered her first word shortly after turning eighteen months old. While the doctors did not believe there was anything wrong with young Zahra, her parents disagreed and spent what money they had trying to find ways to “fix” their young daughter - there was no fix except time, however, and they would never let the young girl forget how many credits had been wasted on her “treatment”.
An intelligent yet shy child Kahra never really flourished at school; her grades were excellent but she was remorselessly teased by her stutter, which despite seemingly-endless speech therapy sessions, never seemed to clear up. The few friends she had were also of a shy and reclusive nature, sitting at what was colloquially known as the “outcasts’ table”, and rarely if ever socialising outside of school. She tried to excel at the extracurricular activities her parents forced upon her, but found herself only giving minimal effort; not out of any sense of rebellion, but rather due to having been ground down by her family’s endless chiding.
As graduation from High School approached, Zahra remained adrift; not knowing what to do next. Her elder siblings had already secured careers that pleased her parents, and yet young Zahra was still the living embodiment of their disappointment. It was only when she visited the Smithsonian Institute as part of her History class that she had a sudden epiphany - gazing upon the replica of the Delta Flyer, she immediately fell in love with its shape and history. She would get her degree in Engineering and become a starship designer.
Her parents were elated, for about five minutes. Rather than apply to Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems like her brother, she instead applied to Starfleet Academy. Her stutter and the ridicule that accompanied it followed her to the Academy, but she persevered, having found a place where she was accepted and unlikely to be bothered by her parents. With her ultimate goals of entering Test Pilot School and designing her own starship, Zahra elected to extend her time at the Academy to double-major in Engineering and Helm Operations, focusing on propulsion technologies, notably the Quantum Slipstream Drive.
When she finally graduated three years behind her peers with the equivalent of a Masters Degree, she found herself stationed at Utopia Planitia, assisting on a project to look into potential flaws with the Slipstream Drive - something she later discovered was due to the loss of two Vesta-class starships in the Delta Quadrant and other technical issues throughout the fleet. When the project concluded, she was elated to find she had been recommended to serve on a Vesta-class herself. That elation was tempered a little by the knowledge that while the majority of the Vesta fleet were exploring the far reaches of the Delta Quadrant, the Artemis was being kept in the Alpha Quadrant for “special duties” - what that meant, she didn’t know, but she did her best to put the disappointment behind her and focus on making a career for herself.
Personality Profile
Academy Major(s): Tactical - Helm Operations, Engineering
Academy Minor(s): Propulsion Systems, Slipstream Dynamics
Short-Term Goals: Gain entrance to and graduate from Starfleet’s Test Pilot School, the first step to working with experimental systems as her primary duty.
Long-Term Goals: Gain a position working at the Advanced Starship Design Bureau, preferably as a designer.
Personality: Kahra is shy by nature, rarely saying more than is required by a situation and never making eye contact unless absolutely necessary. Her stutter is almost undetectable when she is focusing on her work, but in social situations or situations of high stress, it is evident despite being less obvious thanks to constant practice and when she deliberately chooses her words.
Achievements: Graduating from Starfleet Academy with a dual Major in Engineering and Helm Operations
Illnesses: Though not an illness, Kahra still has a stutter that surfaces regularly.
Weaknesses: Social situations
Fears: Failing at her duties and proving her parents right.
Prejudices: People who think they are “better” than others due to rank, social standing, or intellectual or athletic prowess.
Distinguishing Features: None
Personal Paradigm Shifts
Most Painful Experience: In Kahra’s third year, she was a candidate to join the prestigious Cadet Training Squadron 47, known as “Red Squad”, but ultimately was passed over for not having the right extracurricular interests. Her parents found out and wrote a particularly hurtful letter suggesting she would never amount to anything in Starfleet and should come home where they would find something suitable for her to do. She has not contacted her family since.
Best Time: Her time at Starfleet Academy, where the mocking was less and she was accepted by her peers for who and what she was. It didn’t matter that she didn’t want to party, and wanted to focus on her books or her studies.
Role Model: Thomas Eugene Paris, the man who piloted the Voyager on its 7-year journey back from the Delta Quadrant and designed the coolest ship ever, the Delta Flyer.
