Note: This species is extinct.

The Hur'q were a warp-capable insectoid species who apparently originated in the Gamma Quadrant. They are now believed to be extinct.

Physiology

The Hur'q have been described as army ants with the armor of the samurai. The accuracy of this description is unclear, but it is known that the Hur'q were an insectoid species who were physically intimidating and effective in personal combat.

Psychology

Though the Hur'q are a little understood species, it seems clear from their known history that, in general, many Hur'q were violent and ruthless. Greed and domination seem to have been their primary motivations.

Society

The Hur'q were scavengers who placed a great deal of importance on obtaining as many treasures as possible. They employed aggressive tactics to achieve that goal, rather than sharing or trading. Across the galaxy, they would invade a planet, plunder it for anything they could get, and would destroy the rest. The Hur'q appeared to have little to no regard for the sanctity of other cultures and were merciless in their actions.

Culture and Tradition

The true name of the species which has come to be known as the Hur'q remains unknown. The Klingons gave them the name 'Hur'q', using a word from their own language meaning 'outsiders'.

History and Politics

The origins of the Hur'q have not been recorded. The ruins of a Hur'q civilization were discovered in the Gamma Quadrant by a Vulcan survey team in 2372 and it is believed that this planet was their homeworld. It seems likely that the Hur'q were utilising the Bajoran wormhole long before its modern discovery.

Approximately one thousand years ago, the Hur'q invaded the Klingon homeworld of Qo'noS. Their attack was so merciless that it threatened the very existence of the Klingon Empire and came to be regarded as one of the greatest challenges faced by the Klingons in their history. The Hur'q plundered Qo'noS and caused widespread destruction across the planet before they departed. Among the treasures stolen by the Hur'q were two revered objects, the legendary bat'leth known as the Sword of Kahless, and the sacred cloth it was wrapped in, called the Shroud of the Sword. Both items were later recovered in the Gamma Quadrant.

The dominance of the Hur'q seemed to lessen in the centuries which followed their attack on Qo'noS and they are now believed to have died out completely. The circumstances of their extinction remain unknown.
