Personal History
Born and raised on a farm in Tennessee, William joined the Academy at the age of 19, much to the disappointment of his parents, who had always wanted him to head up the family farm. The first many years of his life was spent learning about plants and animals, and he always had an interest in science, particularly biology. His father had always thought that farming pumped through William's veins. But though agriculture was in his blood, it was the sky that had always called to him. Like so many, he longed to be among the stars, and avidly sought a position as a helmsman of the Fleet.
William looked at his time in the Academy as the best time of his life. He entered as a double major in Tactical and Engineering; he minored in Science, mostly because it reminded him of home. William committed himself to the study of all his skills, convinced that he needed not only a practical and mechanical knowledge of flight, also knowledge of what a vessel would encounter.
In his third year, his father became ill, and it was for this reason that William took some time off from his studies at the Academy. Helping see his father through his illness brought the Hatter family closer together, and William and his family were finally reconciled on the future of their only son. His parents left the farm and moved to San Francisco to be closer to William, who returned to the Academy to finish his training.
