Electromagnetism is defined as an attraction between particles created by electricity. Electromagnetic forces are responsible for the chemical bonds between atoms which create molecules, and intermolecular forces. The electromagnetic force governs all chemical processes, which arise from interactions between the electrons of neighboring atoms. The EM spectrum is generally divided into seven regions, in order of decreasing wavelength and increasing energy and frequency. The common designations are: radio waves, microwaves, infrared (IR), visible light, ultraviolet (UV), X-rays and gamma rays.

Federation starships and runabouts use magnetic interlocks to constrain antimatter flow. Electromagnetic fields were used to contain antimatter in standard antimatter containment pods due to the very volatile nature of antimatter.

Electromagnetic fields were also used to magnetize gravity boots for use during extravehicular activities or when artificial gravity was not available.

The Borg used an electromagnetic field to prevent transporter access to their cube after the battle of Wolf 359.
